It's a 1980's toy ad for a mermaid doll and her inflatable seahorse.
I discovered this while browsing through some vintage toy commercials. Because there was a few seconds of animation here (and because I still recall the nightmare that was 'Mirabelle and Me') I wanted to see if there was more animation of Sweet Sea... and boy did I find some!
Twenty-two minutes worth, in fact. Well, I settled down, expecting to see something awful that I could make fun of over beer ...but, um ...no ...that was not to be the case.
Yeah, 'anime'. This little cartoon is GORGEOUS! ...granted, the story and writing are average (at best), but look at the effort that went into the visuals! This stupid mermaid doll has an anime directed by Osamu Dezaki attached to it---a real, theatrical-quality anime (IMHO)! D:
Well, I had to make art ...and this is it. ^^
Now, I can barely draw as it is, and anime isn't my forte, so I used a reference from the show to draw from (no Butch Hartman jokes, please---I didn't trace, I redrew).
Now Purrsia and Mudpuppy would be better subjects for a furry site (and I have enough skill to draw those two in original poses), but I really wanted to give Sweet Sea herself a go. I don't think I did TOO bad. In retrospect, I could probably freehand Sweet Sea if I loosened up a bit (I drew six practice sketches before drawing this card). The issue is a dearth of confidence; that's really all it is.
Also, does anyone remember when one could buy wild-caught mermaid in a can? I seem to remember it ...could have been a delicious dream, though. Hm..
Awwww, I think she's too beautiful to eat!!!! Sweet Sea looks like something I'd love to cuddle instead. And I saw the anime too, and I liked it very much. A member of DeviantArt showed it to me, and I enjoyed watching it.
And you did a good job redrawing her and the fish. You captured her look and expression very well.
