Howl is definitely a million times better than Leto. But whatever outlet you choose to turn to whenever you have problems you should never put the people who care about you through this. It’s one thing to be open about your problems and ask for help but it’s another to put your friends in a position where they find your body.

Honestly...I don't think this part is Leto's fault. Yes, if he wasn't so obsessed with masturbating, he could have talked with Howl and prevented this.

That still doesn’t change the fact Leto was home when howl did this and that he did this after he tried to hang out with Leto and was told to go away. Leto could have prevented this.
I don’t think he should get all the blame or even necessarily most of it cause you are right howl did do it to himself and there is no way Leto could have predicted he would hurt himself this badly. Hindsight IS 20:20 after all. But Leto was given a chance to stop this and he turned him away in favor of his addiction.

Sure, but the fact that Leto didn’t do anything because of his addiction is going to hurt his mental psyche when it isn’t actually his fault. He’s not Howl’s keeper.
I guess my issue is that this might paint the suicide more heavily on him rather than point to Howl’s problem. And Howl has shown he has problems in the series already, so he’s not completely innocent.

Im not saying howl is innocent or that leto is completely responsible for this happening. You are right that leto isn't howl's keeper. What leto is though is howl's friend. Howl was with Leto through a lot of shit including the death of his parents after which Howl's parents were nice enough to take leto in, and both howl and sam forgave leto for his bullshit when he got upset with them over the handjob. The very least leto could do is not turn howl down when he asks for company after a bad day.
Unfortunately our choices in life have consequences and while there is no way to know for sure what those consequences are going to be ahead of time, leto is going to be forced to accept these consequences.

Had to delete and repost this comment. I accidentally wrote "non-person" instead of "non-toxic". The majority of my secondary characters are plot devices. Reth is also a plot device. I don't like characters that are there just to be there unless they've got a minor role. To say he's been reduced to just a plot device is misleading. Howl's cutting was a representation of another addiction, one that's actually physical and able to be recognized more easily by the general public. Howl cutting himself here wasn't just a plot device; it was essential to the theme of the story, showing what could happen if an addiction is left untreated (this is not to say all addictions will end so poorly, nor am I saying Howl dies, since I'm not trying to spoil the next pages). However, I am not familiar with "negative-space fallacy". What is this?

However on that page a while back where you pointed out that Howl/Sam were the most normal "couple" you'd ever drawn (even though they're weren't one), it gave me hope that we'd see that develop more. The fact that he was in mental Hell 2 pages ago, but still cared about Leto through the door, and about not wanting to inconvenience Sam. There were a lot of unwritten stories there. With few pages remaining in the narrative, though, I can sort of see how it has to end.

I see what you mean now. Sometimes I go back and write side stories to my comics (as is coming up for two side comics for Tell Me More). I had a side comic idea for Howl and Sam, but the nature of it made me uncomfortable so I nixed it and recycled the idea into an upcoming comic (unrelated to Addiction). Ideas come all the time; one of them is bound to appeal to those two characters at some point down the road.
