In the story, 8 year old Clarence Coyote accidentally travelled from year 2018 to 1960 in a time travel machine he was told while in 2018 to stay away from. During the trip to 1960, damage is inflicted on the time machine due to Clarence not knowing how to operate it. In year 1960, a coyote family takes Clarence in as one of their own until the time machine can be repaired. During Clarence's stay in 1960, Clarence and a female coyote his age in the neighborhood, Sheryl, fall in love.
