The show is about a 5 year old boy who has some very negative traits of selfishness and entitlement (thinking everything around him is his) and when he does not get things his way, he acts out in a tantrum that is totally unnecessary. He has a 2 yr old sister named Rosie that he totally terrorizes by taking her toys and yelling at her. At school, he is not the brightest kid in the lot but as learned how to take and bully those around him and then pretend that they are the ones bullying him. One example was of him taking his friends' crayons and then make it look like the friend was the one trying to take the crayon. Another show he tries to ask why is his friend's skin brown while his is pink and then stated that he did not like him because he was brown, only to be giving a talking to by his parent and grandmother (no grandfather in the show for some reason) about judging people by their character and not by the color of their skin. He later apologized to the brown skin boy and asked him to be his friend soon after that but a lot of people were not happy about that episode as it was never shown again during reruns. Here in NYC, PBS-13 received a lot of angry letters from parents demanding that the show be taken down. The episode itself was removed from rerun and the station gave an on-air apology for not screening the material before airing it.
In short, in my 30+ years of teaching K-9 grades and raising 6 daughters on my own as a single male parent, I find this character to demonstrate the worst a child could be but they try to play the show as a "happy go lucky" style of entertainment. I've seen this show for 3 seasons, and to me it seems like things are just getting worst with every passing episode. Compared to many kid shows out there, this has to be one of the worst, so much that there are Youtube gag videos about him being older as a Pot Smoking, 24/7 Gamer Social Shut In.

The bit about the adult Caillou is just typical for "parody", i.e. "take innocent character and mix it with very non-innocent characteristics = 'comedy'". I'm fairly certain most people (at least not parents; it seems typical for parents to hate most young children's programming, really*) have never watched Caillou; most don't seem to care at all other than it's sort of lulzy when used for things like YTPs. That is how it is with me and others I know, anyway.
The bit about the brown skin, though... that doesn't make him a bad character. It is very typical for children to be averse to things that are unfamiliar. You can't say they're bad just because an unfamiliar person makes them feel uncomfortable. The outrage that you say happened is ridiculous. Children also have a frequency to act on their feelings, which unfortunately many otherwise normal "adults" have trouble with. Moreover, he's only 4 or 5, and while that is no excuse for his depicted behavior (assuming it is exactly as you say it is), children that young simply do not know better, and no one should become hateful over that (or at all, even if deserved, but especially not over someone who doesn't know better). And really, real kids around his age should be reading and physically playing (especially outside, in nature), not watching TV, so never mind bad influence.
*Quite frankly, if it drives adults to anger, it probably isn't a good influence on children.

From what I can tell, Caillou only ran for five seasons in its native Canada. Why it remained on PBS for as long as it did is a mystery. (Probably not going to be a popular opinion here, but it's probably time for Arthur to retire as well. Those later episodes with Flash animation are real woofers.)

Agreed, I hate when shows change their animation style to save money. It happened with Cyber Chase and Geronimo Stilton, and for some dumb reason, 9 Story (Daniel Tiger, that owns the rights to Garfield and Friends, they re-animated the first intro XP

The couple formal reviews of the show I've seen basically all said, "Little kids love this thing because the entire plot is about the main character getting whatever he wants by being a screaming piece-of-shit. If you're an adult you'll hate it...unless you just want to park your kid in front of the television and ignore him or her for a long time while you do whatever you want. In that case, carry on!"

I hated this show with a passion and despised his spoiled ass. someone on Twitter was arguing with me that the message is that he is a 4/5 yr kid and behaves like one which is what the narrator provides but I was like "no fuck that, its the message". that if you don't get your way to act like a spoil brat, beat up other kids at school, and push your sister around. that show was so pretentious and Little Bill had similar vibes as well. I hate this show cause it's not teaching anything to children cause some children may mimic that behavior and may not be helped. show shouldve been canceled long time ago.
