They did a great job making her not be some joke.

And how she had her own trial to overcome... her faults which were tied directly into the entire problem.
She recognised the danger, but the fact she was so... human, and imperfect, it really stood out - she is not infallible.
That is what makes a great superhero - not just to overcome her foes, but to also overcome herself...
