For the last two weeks, I had been working on a project to bring new life to my old laptop by installing Linux on it. I tried a lot of different distros and burned a whole package to disks...

Then today, I went for a bathroom break and left the laptop on the bed for a moment. When I came back I found my cat Dax laying on it.

I don't know what happened. Either she accidentally pressed the combination of keys that screws up the BIOS or she made the laptop overheat. The case is the screen shows gibberish now. Maybe she changed the language to Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. In any case, several days of hard work have gone up in digital smoke.

Me: "By the way, I use Arch"
Dax: "Not anymore"

sorry about that.

actually that looks like a display issue. my old computer kicked the bucket in the same way. I think either the video card went bad or the connection from the actual screen got damaged.

Did you sit on it?
GreenPika

no, I bought it used and it looked as if someone had played rugby with it inside a moving dumpster. @.@; I'm not surprised it died. The ribbon cable connecting the screen in yours might have just gone wonky or maybe it's loose.

This laptop cost me $12 back then.

I already found another one on eBay... can you believe how things have gone up in these years? This one cost me $17 and has a broken hinge.
GreenPika

broken hinge huh. Supports my theory that it's the display.

I think mine cost like $40 and supposed to be "refurbished" but by that it turns out they meant, someone slapped a fresh OS install in it and called it good. seriously, there was garden soil in the heat sink. wtf

Oh, no. The one with the broken hinge is the "new" one I ordered, that one hasn't arrived yet.
The old one was chap because the owner forgot his password and could not make it work.

Can you imagine how mad I was there for a second?
But I can't stay mad at that face...

But of course it was the black cat what's the suspect.
ThaPig

Well, I have photographic evidence of culpability
TheAtomicDog

A culpability clearly verified, without compunction, by the culprit.
FrancisJCat

Neither actually.
You caught your cat trying to communicate in its own language with its home planet.
ThaPig

That's entirely possible.

It look likes those thingies in the matrix, like, what the guys outside the matrix read on their computers all the time

Silliness aside,
Sorry for your loss

I had the Matrix code as a screen saver for many years. It looked awesome when I had multiple monitors.

incidentally I used to work at IBM Thinkpad Hardware support back in 1997-2000
if it's a hardware problem I might could fix it.
do you get anything legible when it boots? or is it all hieroglyphics from the moment you power it up?
ThaPig

Nothing shows up, just this. But I already bought another old Thinkpad on Ebay.
Thanks anyways! It's greatly appreciated.

ok, well if you want me to have a look at it, I'd be happy to.
no charge unless it needs parts... and if you already replaced it I kinda doubt you are going to wanna waste more money on it.

Thanks! I really appreciate it, but the laptop was more than 15 years old and it had already other problems, the screen was already dim and was sluggy to run even with Lubuntu. I had it mostly for the sentimental value, I got it really cheap because the original owner had forgotten his password and could not start it. It served me for many years.

I found another chap one on eBay and fixed it. I'll keep this one away from my feline menace.

I haven't worked at IBM since 2000. I remember being briefed about the A-series but there wasn't any training material for it yet... not that they ever bothered to train us BEFORE something new came out... but that's another story

ok, np. was just offering to help if I could

The big point of this laptop was the bios password was allegedly impossible to hack. So if you forgot it, the laptop was locked up forever. I got it for $12 because of that.

I searched online and someone had already posted a way to hack it. It involved soldering some components that bypassed the ship where the password was stored. Remember when you could buy parts at Radio Shack? It's been some time.

I worked at RadioShack as their computer guy before I worked at IBM, so yeah...

also as an former IBM contractor, I know how to remove bios passwords, it was part of my training (what little training they offered)
and for $12 you cannot beat that with a stick!

I mean hell, I'd pay you the shipping just to have something to play with.

Oh, I wanted to spare you the trouble. But if it's going to be a fun project for you, by all means, PM me an address, and I'll mail it to you!
