It's really telling how Tristan isn't sobbing or showing any kind of distress when he starts crying. Those aren't tears born from sadness or trauma. It's probably the first actual sense of validation and emotional acknowledgement that he's gotten since... Well, ever.
The sad thing about living life as a thief is that no matter how justified you may be in needing to do it to live, you're still a thief taking something that doesn't belong to you. People are still going to be upset that you stole from them. They'll still want to get rid of you rather than help you get to a point where you no longer need to be able to steal to survive anymore. So on top of being seen as something nobody wants, and the only people who "want" him just wish to use him to get what THEY want, he's really had nobody on his side.
