Dr. XXX
no.4: Griffin - The Invisible Man

When it comes to mad scientists, one must really pay tribute to the golden era of horror, where these crazed doctors were all over the place, wreaking havoc with various absurd experiments. Of course through the droves of quacks a few stood above the rest and I'm sure you're already thinking "What abut Dr. Frankenstein?" and while it's true that he may very well be the most famous mad scientist of all time, let me ask you this? What do you think of when you hear the name "Frankenstein?" The doctor of the monster? I think if we're all being honest, it's the monster and when your own experiment trumps you as the creator, you lose some major brownie points in my opinion.

Another valid candidate for a vintage mad scientist would definitely be Dr. Jekyll, however much like Mr. Freeze of Batman fame, Jekyll is far more overshadowed by his non-doctorate having alter-ego 'MISTER' Hyde and well, without Hyde you just have a regular old scientist. It sort of defeats the purpose. (It also doesn't help that neither of these characters have a set, 'canon' look to really draw from.) No, when it comes to true blooded, golden age mad scientists, my vote will always go with Griffin, the Invisible Man! Portrayed by the incomparable Claude Rains, the striking image, or lack thereof, of the Invisible Man will always be something I love and is probably why I have a love of bandages and goggles to this day.

Truthfully, any of the characters I've mentioned could have fit in this spot, Griffin taking the gold as it were is purely for personal reasons as The Invisible Man is my favorite of the old Universal horror films but the story of a scientist destroyed by their own creation is such a staple that I needed someone who fulfilled that role within this countdown somewhere and that had to place considerably high because of it. So whether it's a man daring to play God, or one giving in to his inner vices or one simply driven mad with potential power, let's all take a moment to remember the good doctors who turned out... not-do good in the end~
