no.5: Dr. Finkelstein - The Nightmare Before Christmas
Now entering the Top Five of this year's countdown and there's no one better to start it off then the doctor with a pop top from my favorite movie ever, Dr. Finkelstein who is also referencing another one of my favorite movies, Re-Animator. Why? Because I can't draw real people to save my life and I didn't want to risk attempting to draw Jeffrey Combs, even if Herbert West is one of my all time favorite mad scientists. True, I did draw two real people in the previous picture but given the nature of MST3K, those two are really more on par with cartoon characters in my opinion and are much easier to exaggerate. That's not so much the case with Re-Animator and since I hated to leave him out and since Finkelstein is the only character in this countdown that really fits the motif of 're-animator', I gave him the pleasure of this impromptu homage!
...so is this a Re-Animator or Nightmare Before Christmas shout out? Well, the latter of course but I don't think there's much else I can say that I haven't in all my years of doing these. I've gone on and on about my love for this movie. It's something I've carried from childhood well into adulthood and even still, my actions speak louder than words. Within the years I've done these I've given Nightmare Before Christmas it's well due respect, staring by adding in Oogie Boogie, then Lock, Shock and Barrel, having Jack Skellington win one year and then the addition of the Mayor back in 2017. I've all but tapped this resource for all it's worth by show casing all it's best primary and secondary characters, Finkelstein is simply the one that took the longest to get to and while it's well overdue, it's sort of bitter-sweet.
I've done about all I can do. I'm not going to start digging into the various Halloween Town inhabitants and unless I do some kind of past years round up, this will be the last you all see of Nightmare Before Christmas characters, in these countdowns at least! I don't want to end up repeating myself more then I already do and it's very easy to give a movie like this that drips with Halloween aesthetic constant shout outs, but all the same it's kind of nice. I've given this film that I love all the attention I could and it still doesn't feel old or stale to me. I've done all I can with it and it's time to move on... to inevitably draw more Tim Burton characters that I haven't yet. Such is life, no?
