no.11: Gutten Kisling - OKAGE: Shadow King

Today marks the first in a line of characters who, albeit unintentional, fit the descriptor of "crazy old man with a mustache and a white coat." I swear, I didn't mean to include so many! Hell, I actively tried to include as many varied designs as I could in this lineup to avoid it, but sadly it just seems that what got me into the mad scientist trope as a whole was "crazy old men with mustaches." Hopefully the ones I chose though are distinct enough to stand on their own, despite that.

That all being said, I swear these Halloween Countdowns aren't just an excuse for me to just slowly draw the entire cast of OKAGE: Shadow King but if it does result in that, well I'm not fighting it! Of course it comes as no shock that OKAGE is one of my favorite games of all time and among it's roster of eccentric weirdos, Kisling has always stood out the most to me, second only to the shadow king himself, Stan! Something about his quirky, manic nature coupled with his long winded, pseudo-intellectualism that is both total bull but actual astute at the same time just makes him a joy to me... but maybe that's just because I always pictured him as an incarnation of Weird Al Yankovic...

I know that in terms of fan popularity, Kisling's at the bottom of the barrel for being a rather poor excuse for a party member (though I've played the game to the point that I can use him rather effectively) but his lackluster performance in battle has never caused me to stray away from him. Sure, I may ditch him for another character as soon as possible, but RPGs are all about the story, so this eccentric scholar being both the absence of yet also the voice of reason in a group of misfits and his affinity towards ghosts-(and meaty women)-makes him a character I simply couldn't deny!
