That's the law unless the missing individual is under 18.

The law sucks at time.

What is written on the law books and how Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) act on the basis of those laws are two very things. The law says 24 hours. But call in that a child or teen is missing and police will be at your home setting up search parties and knocking on neighbors doors within an hour's time.

LEOs know that in a case of a missing child/teen, every hour passes means another 10 - 30 miles that missing person could end up. But missing adults is another matter which is why 24 hours is given. The adult could have left on their own, sick of the home situation or as an act of 'revenge.' (Youtube R/ProRevenge and R/NuclearRevenge has many stories of spouses and fiancees leaving).

Where I live (The NYC Metro Area, NYS and certain cities nearby out of state) have since Winter 2018 changed the law for missing Elder Adults and treat it as a missing child case with immediate searching for that individual. This happened because an elder adult with dementia walked out of nursing home room and the police was called. The police stated that they can not act for 24 hours. The next day they came in and search the nearby grounds. That night the temps dropped to the low 20s. The last thing to be searched was the roof of the facility, where she was found frozen to death.  Since then, as sad as this story is, it changed the law in that missing Elder Adults cases are to be treated like missing Children/Teens with immediate action to look for them. Also included in this law for immediate search are handicapped adults - both physical and mental handicaps.

Now this is an improvement on the law for some, it does not protect all. Normal adults like most of us, if we up and disappear, there is a 24 hour wait before searching for them can begin.

A lot can happen in 24 hours...

Did some quick Google search to see if I could find anything about what to do in case of someone goes missing in Sweden. And what I found was that calling the police is ALWAYS an option, and they will make a call if there is need for a search party or not based on the missing persons age, health(both mentally and physically) and current wheather.
Always call the police if you fear their life might be in danger, be it from self harm, wheather conditions or other factors.

If you don't feel their life is in danger and is simple worried, (and they are not too old/young) call friends and family first to see if they are there, check other places they usually spend time at, and after that check in with local hospitals. If they still have not turned up, call the police.

If you do call the police, remember to call them again if the person shows up without their assistent.

And that is apperntly how one should handle a missing person situation in Sweden, and I wouldn't be surprised if it applies to most other countries.

That is great to know, but as you hinted, you would not be surprised if it applies to many other countries. Here in many areas in the USA, except for special cases there is a 24 hour wait for adults. It used to be a 24 hour wait for everyone from children to elderly adults but the laws have changed over the years. For children, teens, handicapped adults (both physical and mental handicaps) and elderly adults in my area of the USA (The New York City Metro area and I guess 500 miles about from there), searching for the missing individual is immediate.

I just realized it also depends on the situation for adults. If they walked out the house or work and disappeared, there is a 24 hour wait. But if they were at a beach (Lake or Ocean) and they went out to the water and disappeared, the nearby waters will be searched immediately. I just remember that, having been a lifeguard in my younger years and heard of many beach front disappearances. I always hated beach life guarding, and preferred pool life guarding. It is unfortunate that the longer they have disappeared in the waters the more likely they would be found dead days later and very few are found alive after 24 hours.

for the NYPD it's a no https://themissingny.nycitynewsservice.com/part-two/nyp...

Michigan it varies  https://www.michigan.gov/msp/0,4643,7-123-1878_32000-29...

California it doesn't:  https://www.lapdonline.org/missing_persons_listing/cont...

Connecticut is a no: https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/POST/GENERAL_NOTICES/Miss...

Shall I go on? it's a MYTH that you have to wait 24 hours.   some PDs it's policy, but for majority, it's a no, there is no waiting period.

Yeah, same mentality as in Russia:
- Police, save me, someone's trying to kill me!
- Not yet killed? Well, can't help here. Call us when they'll kill you.

Also, it's 3 day after the person gone missing  in Russia.
