Location: The Emerald Vaults
One of the last places on Mobius where magic has endured, the Emerald Vaults are a special series of sealed vaults that hold magical artifacts too valuable or too dangerous to be destroyed or kept out of confinement. Notable entries include the Sword of Acorns, a sacred symbol of the monarchy and artifacts belonging to the last royal wizard, Ixis Naugus, who was banished during the Technological Revolution. Somewhere within the elaborate vaults are seven Chaos Emeralds that have been in the royal family since it ascended to the throne of Mobius.
The Vaults have been a part of political intrigue for as long as they have existed. Notable events include an attempt by rogue wizards to steal the contents during the Technological Revolution, and, in the early years of the Great War, the denizens of Undercity attempted to tunnel upward into the Emerald Vaults at the behest of their mysterious leader.
During the time of the Scientific Council, the Vaults were a subject of constant disagreement. Almost weekly, some members would propose to open them and study the contents, and the rest of the members would dismiss the notion in a trend that lasted from the birth of the council to the coup.
During the coup, a group of heroic survivors burst into the vault and took many things in order to keep them out of Robotnik's hands, most notably the Sword of Acorns, which he would undoubtedly have destroyed. Time was of the essence for these escaping Mobians, however, and so much was left in the vault, including some of the Chaos Emeralds, various magical artifacts, and a portal to other dimensions.
