Almost all of polonium's historical uses have been superseded by other, safer materials. Therefore this picture instead commemorates Marie Curie, regarded by some as the greatest woman in science. The crystal in Twilight's crown is of pitchblende/uraninite, from which the Curies first extracted polonium, and the years are those of Marie's two Nobel prizes.
