SEROUSLY! This had to be the biggest flaw presented with the changelings. The show villainized them for doing the one thing they had no choice BUT to do.
They could have done so much more with the changelings.

yeah, instead they changed their whole race just to "fit in". It feels like telling a christ (or any other religion) "You're evil as long as you believe in this" or telling a black/white person "Your skin color and culture is evil. Dye your skin and live like me"

Instead of changing and trashing everything in season 9, they could have reformed the villains and letting Chrysalis form a new hive of old changelings but them being friend with Equestria. As far as we know, it doesn't harm other creatures of Changelings eating love. It only harms them if they take too much like Chrysalis did during season 2
( sorry for the double comment. I was too slow with the edit)

Maybe, but I think that for a show about making friends and redeeming people the final message has to be that some people can't be redeemed. The average changeling maybe could have chosen to be good, but Chrysalis never would have.

To be honest, I never saw Chrysalis as pure evil. In season 2, she just did what she thought was the best way to make sure her subjects can survive. Similar when she returned to kidnap the princesses and the mane 6
If she would have been pure evil, why didn't she just attack Canterlot after she made sure to capture all the powerful ponies? She could have stolen a lot of magic, stored it (if that's possible) and then moved to the next town. I think Shining Armor and Cadance would have had problems to save everyone else (even with Discord, Starlight and others) if Chrysalis and her hive would have gone for a real war while hiding (or killing) the powerful ponies.
My theory was (and since I reject the end of season 9 is still is) that Chrysalis wanted the best for her subjects and when they turned their back on her, she felt betrayed, lost and was slowly driven into madness. The Legion of Doom gave her some sort of "family" feeling back and might have helped her to think clearly again.
None of them had been beyond redeeming to me. I mean, they already started to get redeemed very slowly.

Chrysalis did have the other changelings attack Canterlot though. If she was just after getting love to feed her subjects why not have them make their own pony forms and live amongst others like so many fanfics have the changelings do, or like Thorax did when he was introduced.

I wish they'd gone deeper into the feeding aspect. DOES it harm its target? Thorax certainly seemed uncomfortable when Chryssy drained him (M rated innuendo aside).
Is love the only emotion that works? How vital is love vs other forms of food?
It also makes you wonder. Did the changelings ever attempt an open relationship? Peace talks? There could have been so many good side stories and so much history. Alas, 20 - 30 min episodes once again rob us of depth.

who's to say that deep in the past, changelings didn't look like Thorax and the rest do now? Who's to say that they weren't peaceful until a ruler became corrupt with greed, that changed them into what they were by the time Chrysalis came to power? That could easily have been thousands of years..Heck, the change could have been a result of the chaos from Dischord, we don't know.

THAT would have been an amazing take on it. And it certainly seems logical. The "evil" changeling look definitely seems like a corrupted form, rather than a naturally occurring one.
