On Monday, August 1st, 1960, Marge Coyote and the cubs were out taking pictures within 50 miles of their home in Duran, New Mexico. Along Highway 54, north of Vaughn, on their way to Santa Rosa, oldest son, Jed, noticed that the remains of a wrecked route marker sign had been burnt. The sign had been that way since Thursday evening four days ago. Mama Marge and the cubs rode past it on Friday, and the family with Daddy Al rode past it on their way to church and back on Sunday. All along, the family presumed the sign had been hit by a car...After all, at the speed of 80 mph they normally drive, details on the sides of the road often go unnoticed. The cubs asked Mom to turn the car around to have a look, which Marge agreed. At the site of the route sign, everyone was amazed when it was obvious the sign had been struck by lightning...so was a nearby bush struck as well...Jed even got a camera from the car to get pictures. "I'm sure glad you saw it was all burned up", Rex said to older brother Jed. "We would of never known". Marge admitted to the cubs, "As fast as your father and I drive through here, nobody ever noticed". "Until now", Jed proudly boasted while taking a picture of it. "You discovered a cool find", Donna complimented Jed. Jed recalled a bush also being there...Marge affirmed that one of the burnt spots on the ground use to be where the bush was. When Rex picked the sign up to examine it, everyone was amazed how the bolt holes were melted out where it had been fastened to the steel post...And that steel post wasn't in pretty shape either. The cubs wanted to take the sign back home as a souvenir...a sign that was actually struck by lightning for real. Marge figured the State of New Mexico would no longer want the sign, being it was bent, the paint scorched to a burnt orange and the bolt holes melted out...Thus Marge gave the okay for the cubs to take the sign. In the Plymouth wagon, Mama Marge is on the driver's seat, oldest son Jed is sitting beside Mom on the front seat, younger son Rex is sitting behind Jed, adopted son Clarence is sitting behind Mom, and daughter Donna is sitting on the very back jump seat.
