Cats, pups, bunnies, foxes... I can be a tad more diverse than that with my paper zoo.

*adds the Rapping Rhino to draw list*

...No, not satisfying---it's not enough to simply add characters, I have to DRAW them ...but I'm not feeling 'Rhino' today. :P

Ah, but I do have a new discovery (best kind!) that will extend my species list, as well entertain some watchers with a bit of nostalgia ...for those who grew up in China, anyway. :P

For everyone else, this is 'Monkey' from Xu Li's adaptation of the ancient Chinese novel 'Journey to the West' (JttW).

...And, yes, I'm aware Monkey has no tail (Curious George Syndrome?) :P

Anyway, JttW was about a Tang-era, Buddhist priest (Xuanzang) on his quest to retrieve some Buddhist writings hidden in some creepy cave in India.
Accompanying the priest were three of his disciples, among who was Monkey.

Xu Li adapted the novel into a series of (now rather rare) children's books, which focused on the magical Monkey character.

I discovered Monkey whilst on a thrift run. A first-run copy of book 22 (of 34) lie before me in the bargain bin, for 75% off. Again, these books are rather rare, so it was quite a deal to say the least!

The translations leave something to be desired, but I could see the appeal of the character, and the series in general.

...I love this line,

"(Monkey and Friar Pig) walked along the street and when they reached a drum tower, they saw a huge crowd. Pig said, "You go on alone. I'll wait here. I'm afraid I might cause trouble."
Seeing he was determined not to go, Monkey said, "Very well, then. Since you are afraid of being stared at, stay here with your face towards the wall""

I dunno, I just found that amusing. :3

Anyway, yes, I do read books outside my Christian faith (I'm cultured like that). Among my favorites are '*The Cat Who Went to Heaven' (Buddhist), which is a fantastic story (and, yes, I'll make art for it one of these years), as well '*Boogie-Wooge Ganesha' (Hindu) ...which was a thing I had not expected to see (but am glad to've seen)! XD

..Anyway, Monkey! :D
