--- Suss and I had grown closer than we thought possible. The fact that we were neighbors meant we could see each other any time we wanted, even if we were in our own yards.
Suss's mother Rose usually worked at the bakery. My father never visited it because a competing one was run by a friend of his, so he got special discounts.
Likewise, my father had very long shifts, usually only coming back after sundown.
I'm not sure of the specifics, but for nearly twenty years, they somehow never saw each other, despite being neighbors.
One day while Suss and I were visiting by the fence when we were supposed to be raking leaves, my father came outside to help me. Likewise, Rose did the same for Suss.
How could we know that Rose and my Father had been lovers years before we were born? How could we know that they still pined for each other to the point that they felt they would betray their current husband/wife if they remained where they were?
There were no words, just a firm hand on our arms and a pull. We cried, we reached out, but the pulling continued and we were torn away from each other.
Our parents moved within a week of this event, choosing not to preserve any contact information.
My father claimed it was to save his marriage, our family, from him doing something stupid.
I only saw it as a betrayal as the vision of the one I loved the most being torn away from me will haunt me for the rest of my life.
