Lazarus (Lazar) and Garrette being attacked while having a rest at a nearby river. Lazar summoning up his power fire abilities, accidentally setting the trees on fire while fighting and Garrette while trying to use his water abilities to help out in the fight, getting annoyed at having to summon some rain to put out Lazar's recklessness though is still having fun with the thrill of the hunt. While they don't have a deep history together, Lazar and Garrette share a similar backstory. Both of them rebelled and went against the wishes of their parents/elders and forged their own path in life. Plus they are the only two of Ion's Hunter group Fangenclaw that are not officially Hunters, though they could easily pass the trials, they just have to stop being lazy and do it
Lazar was born into one of the few remaining dragon tribes up in a secluded mountain. He was trained in their ways and traditions and eventually became one of their village defenders. He knew nothing of the world outside his small village until one fateful day when Ion came up the mountain and to his village. While Ion was a fox, he had dragon ancestors and wanted to learn more about their culture. While visitors were permitted in the village, they never really got any and most of the citizens just stayed away from Ion while the defenders kept a close eye on him. Lazar ended up being the one to tail Ion and eventually had interactions with him. Ion and Lazar got to talking about the dragons and their history and about the world outside Lazar's home. Fearing that one of their own was getting corrupted, the dragon elders cast Ion out but before he left, he told Lazar to come and find him if he wanted to expand his horizons. A few years went by and Lazar was getting tired of his secluded life and decided to finally leave the village. Knowing that there would be resistance, he sneaked out one night and stole one of the dragon slaying weapons that his village had kept from the time they were hunted. He tried to leave the village without confrontation but he was spotted and the defenders descended upon him. Lazar was told to come back to the village willingly or he would be taken by force. Drawing the dragon slaying sword, he lightly slashed the first defender that came at him (Lazar would come to regret this latter on, once he found out what a dragon slaying weapon actually does). The elders over watching what was happening, seeing that Lazar was using a dragon slaying weapon and had attacked one of their own, told the defenders to fall back. The elders then cast Lazar out of their community, telling him he would never be welcomed back and promised his execution if he did. Lazar in his mind, finally free of the overbearing elders, went out and eventually found Ion and his group, joining them and forging ahead a Hunter (though unofficially)
Garrette was born in a small fishing village on the coast, to a very strict and sheltered family. He had a few siblings, but he was the only one of them that caused mischief and got into lots of trouble. He had a habit of stealing stuff and was good at it but was not so good at the getting away part and would almost always get caught. This caused a lot of confrontations with his parents, which would just clamp down harder on him. One day he had enough and decided to run away, ending up in another nearby town, becoming a street kid. He used his stealing ability to survive and started getting better at it, figuring out that he could run and dive into the nearest river or large body or water and stay there for long enough for the searched to disparce using his under water breathing abilities as an aquatic fox. He would sometimes still be caught and spent some time in local jails, but was always released not long after due to his younger age and that there was nobody to claim him back. One day while out pickpocketing, he was observed buy Ion and Zephyr who were in the town out on a hunt. While at first they did nothing about Garrette's stealing, when one of the victims noticed and cried out, Zephyr started running after Garrette. He gave Zephyr a good chase but was eventually cut off by Ion who ended up sucker punching him, knocking Garrette out cold. Local authorities took Garrette to the local jail where he woke up a bit latter. Hours after that he was surprised when he was told that someone bailed him out and ended up meeting the two boys that got him placed in the jail in the lobby. Ion told him that they decided to bail him out on the one condition that Garrete would join him and Zephyr on their travels and hone his skills for constructive work as Ion had taken an interest in him. Garrette agreed and slowly warmed to his new companions as he felt welcomed and needed by someone for the first time in his life. Though he sometimes reverts to his old ways, Garrette is adamant not to loose the trust his friends have for him
