Apparently Sally is a nickname for the name Sarah. So, that's the name I went with.
Unlike the versions of Sally you're familiar with, Sarah is a squirrel, instead of a chipmunk. That's why she has a fluffy tail. However, her tail is based off Nigel Acorn's, instead of Max Acorn's.
For Sarah's clothes, I stuck with Sally's iconic look of a blue vest and blue boots. Next I added her black tank top and black shorts from the reboot, but I went with a more simplified design.
Naturally, she would wear white gloves like most characters. And no, those aren't Sally's Ring-Blades from the reboot. It's actually Sonic's Crystal Ring from Sonic Adventure. I added a second one to complete the look.
Sarah's mainly attacks with her tail, which she also uses as a third arm. As for her Crystal Rings, they simply power up her Spin Dash.
I was thinking of making her a flying squirrel in response to Sonic's speed. However, I scrapped this concept when I realized how many issues this caused. So, I simply went with her being a ground squirrel.
1) She would be overpowered. 2) It would eliminate the need for Tails entirely, who is already Sonic's foil. 3) And it would be stealing Ray's gimmick.

Sarah started off as another version of Sally Acorn from an another reality. However, repeated exposure to the "Source of All" and its royal artifacts caused her body to undergo an evolution. On the outside, she looked the same, but her short tail grew into a long, fluffy tail.
After this, Sally explained to her father that she wanted to limit her exposure to the "Source." King Max reluctantly granted her request, believing that she would come around eventually.
However, Sally grew to resent her father as time went on. The king's brash decisions and need to uphold old traditions caused friction with his daughter.
King Max wanted his daughter to inherit the throne. However, old traditions required princesses to get married before they could become queens.
The king insisted that Sally marry someone from nobility. And her two options were Antoine or Geoffrey. However, Sally refused to marry either of them. Antoine was pompous and could never back up his boasting or tall tales. And Geoffrey would take things too far, always believing that he was right in the end.
The king grew tired of Sally questioning him and threatened to strip Sally of her royal status if she didn't honor these traditions. This caused Sally to reach her boiling point as she accepted. To the king's shock, Sally both renounced her royal status and rejected being his daughter.
Sally left Knothole to continue freedom fighting and adventuring in the outside world. She even changed her name to Sarah, as a means of taking on a new identity.
Sarah's new adventures would lead her to eventually meet Blaze the Cat. This encounter would lead into Sarah idolizing the fiery princess and training under her. And finally, Sarah would leave to start a new life in a different reality...
