No matter how poor we were, we could always afford to just drive around at Christmas and just "window shop" at all the lights and decorations set up by other people. Here in Edmonton is a district called Candycane Lane, famous for it's over-the-top Christmas light displays.
I bet next year I'll look at this picture and hate how it turned out, but I really wanted to try out my idea, and do a clean picture of the Lynx Twins for my family to see. I'm gonna get NORMAL weekends again soon, and I desperately need the rest: working Night Shifts then having single days off and using those days off to try and do daytime schedule people activities has been hell on my system, as well as the holiday stress and workload. I've been desperate to make SOMETHING, so tonight in sheer exhaustion I finished this picture. But, enough griping: things will get better, soon! Merry Christmas everyone, and enjoy the New Year! <3

Worked nights for nearly 5 years, it really messes you up and nearly costed me my fiancée. Happy to see you still pulling through with the drive to create despite the wonk of it.

An im sure you will love it next year, no artist ever hates there old work, nope not ever. I certainly don't have a bin of shame for older works nope not at all.....don't look at it...

Do the best you can and carry on, and know that the simple act of moving forward is powerful stuff. I know, just felt like being hard on myself. Next year I hope to do something even better. :3
I don't mind working evenings... but trying to do daytime stuff with family and friends is almost impossible, especially with smaller weekends. Thankfully the holiday is done now, and things are winding down.

When I was their age I used to walk around the neighborhood with my parents and look at the decorations.

We'd also go to our local Mall and see the Santa display and all the people milling around. We had a small Mall, but it was still pretty cool. The street lights on Main Street also have special wrought iron hanging decorations they put up every year.

Don't forget to stop at a coffee shop for a to-go cup of hot chocolate for the kids!

I remember going around the neighborhood in the car the evening before Christmas eve too.  It always felt so magical.

I think the whole fuss of doing this activity: dressing up, driving around, interacting as a family, looking at the creativity of complete strangers and how they did their decorations was magical too. <3

I grew up in a poverty-class family so our holidays were often with few gifts & no large dinners. But I do remember the annual ritual of driving out the see all the lights on Christmas Eve every year. No matter what, it made it really feel like the holidays.

I think doing anything with people that matter to you make the magic of the holidays. Card games, watching tv, darts, playing piano and singing together, and outdoor bonfire...
I think poorer people appreciate the core aspect of the holidays better, though many poor people grow up and over-compensate for perfect childhoods that they never had...

"Hey, buckle up back there!"

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I find things like that depressing, people flaunting their surplus cash like that. But too be fair those light displays are amazing and works of art that take dedication and skill too assemble.

"No way, Man! Safety's for losers, Man!" :D
Dad would likely drive real slow. The kids are there to look at lights, and in the residential streets at night, most people are at home doing the Netflix thing instead of driving, lol.
I remember when I was a kid I was allowed to ride in the back of a pickup truck. "Sit down or you'll get a lickin'!" and we sat still, watching traffic around us. Perfectly fine back in the day!
Yeah, some of the artistry to plan those super technical Christmas displays is pretty amazing: one video on YouTube I watched was a walk through of an extreme Christmas home, where every room had a tree of it's own, lights everywhere! Crazy, but it DID look really cool!

Probably but watch for cops! I'm more concerned for drunken fools hooning around! Although the raw numbers have gone up, the statistics of injury and death have gone.
I bet these kids never do though? By the way I'm only joking around, don't take me too seriously.
I've done the pickup thing a few times as well!

They can get overboard with it! I just have a nice tree.

It's all good. I can always say they're parked/stopped at a cul-de-sac looking at a real good setup, free to scoot around on the seat for a few minutes. I don't want anything bad to happen to these kids in my comic yet, and they're not in the BIG City area: if Dad says it's safe to scoot freely for one night, it's safe. :3

Fair enough, then this could be the 80's for all I know before it became law.

Hey, just came back and now I remember I've done that in my uncles pickup. Admit it, if you've done stuff as a kid your folks didn't have anything too do with and had an element of risk it's usually him!

I know this comment’s a little late, but don’t you just love family traditions like this? I remember when my family used to do that, too...

Good times, good times...
