On December 13, 1636, the militias of the Massachusetts Bay Colony are organized into three regiments, a moment held as the birth of the National Guard in the United States.  During the early years of the United States, the militias of the various states would provide the bulk of the American fighting forces thanks in part to a reluctance to having a large standing national army.  Militiamen provided most of the American troops in such wars as the War of 1821, Mexican-American War, the early days of the American Civil War, and the Spanish-American War.  The Militia Act of 1903 saw a major reformation in the organization of the state militias as individual state National Guards which were then incorporated into the National Guard of the United States (then a reserve element of the US Army) in the 1930s and thus creating the first formation of the current National Guard.  Over the following years, the National Guard has played a major role in America's wars, including World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Operation Desert Storm, and the current Global War on Terror (GWOT).  Guardsmen have also been deployed in peacekeeping and disaster response operations across the globe.  The National Guard has played a prominent role in domestic affairs as well, being deployed in response to natural disasters across the country to provide assistance as well as being used to end multiple riots and even being used to help enforce the policy of desegregation in the 1950s.
