Dook was dropped off at our house early afternoon. Her daddy had to stay at work real late for some kind of meeting or something, so he asked my mom if she could stay the night.

Of course, I wasn't expecting it to affect me.

"Hey, sweet-pea," mom called, poking her head into my room..

I paused my videogame and glanced up. "Huh?"

She was carrying the little woosal in her arms, and a bag was slung over her shoulder. "Would you mind watching her for just a little bit while I get ready for bed?"

“Stacey can’t?” I asked, referring to my older sister; my brother was still at work.

“She’s been helping me all day,” mom pointed out, leaning down to drop the squirming little girl onto her feet. As soon as the little twerp’s footed paw-pads touched the carpet, she started toddling around.

"Maaan," I groaned. "I just figured out this boss and--" I gestured to the paused screen.

"I just need you to watch her for a little bit so I can take a shower and maybe a little break. She’s getting sleepy anyway, so she might just wanna conk out.”

I tossed the controller away. "Ugh, fine," I growled.

"Hey. Don't get fussy. A Scout is Helpful and Cheerful," she admonished.

"Yeah, yeah," I continued to grumble, slouching more into my beanbag chair.

Mom set the baby-bag down nearby. "Her books are in here. Maybe you could read to her?" She suggested, opening it up. "Ask her which one she wants you to read."

"Okay," I mumbled, still glum, moving the bag to where I wanted it. It was heavier than I expected. "Is she stinky?" I asked, watching her trot around and kick things that were scattered on the floor.

"I just changed her," mom reassured me. "If you need anything, and I’m still in the shower, you can bug your sister, kay?"

"Fine," I begrudgingly agreed. Mom abandoned me with the toddler. She turned toward me, giving her pacifier a few suckles.

"Whut?" I asked. "You better be good and fall asleep real fast. Once you're out, I'm going back to my game," I told her, looking at the paused screen.

She just gave another couple suckles on her paci.

"Okay, c'mon," I told her, though it was silly cuz like, she probably couldn't understand me. I jostled the baby-bag to draw her single-threaded brain’s attention to it.

She waddled over, pausing and looking at something along the way. I patted again, regaining her attention, and she continued. But, she didn't go to the baby-bag where I was patting. She went around my back to the opposite side.

"Hey, no," I said, like she was a dog or something, when she went to Norville and started putting her hands on him. "You sit," I picked her up and put her on the bean-bag, "over here."

But, as soon as I plopped her down, she hopped up and went right back to Norville. Her little grabby-paws clutched him without restraint.

"Hey, hey, hey," I tried to dissuade her and pry her hands off. But as I did she started to cry. "Shzshh," I shushed when she opened her muzzle, pacifier dropping out. "Hush, c'mon, if mom comes up here, she'll yell at me cuz she thinks I'm ignoring you! Aaaaargh!" I tried to calm her down, to put her pacifier back in her mouth, while trying to cover my ears to muffle her whining. "Okay! Okay!" I finally caved, and raised my rump up to swish Norville over to beside me. "Here! You can have him, just stop whining, already!"

It was like a switch was flipped. The tears stopped and she gave me a smug grin before popping her pacifier back into her muzzle and shuffling over. She practically dove onto Norville, squirming and wriggling over him.

I sighed. Mom was probably gonna get mad at me for appeasing her. It was clear she was just crying to get her way and I completely fell for it. "Well, you're happy now, huh?" I asked.

Her turquoise eyes twinkled back at me.

"All right well, since you're all comfy," I muttered, acquiescing to her demands, "what do you want me to read?" I asked, opening the bag and pulling out some of the books.

"B'mm," she said.

"Eh?" I asked, wrinkling my nose in confusion.

Her muzzle opened, and the pacifier dropped out. "Bish," she said.

"Gggggghhhhh you're getting drool all over Norville," I winced.

"Bish," she said, pointing at the bag.

"This?" I tried to anticipate what she was saying. "Bag," I said. "Baaaag."

"No. Bish," she said, pointing again.

Okay... Time to play charades. I pulled out a thing from the bag. "Bish?"

"Bish," she said again, pointing at the bag.

I pulled something else out. "Bish?"

She wriggled a bit, but still pointed at the bag. "Bish."

I pulled yet another thing out. "...Bish?" I asked, starting to get flustered.

She slid off and waddled to the bag.

"Hey, I dunno if you're s'posta be in there..." I said, nervously, but I didn't wanna shoo her away in case she whined again.

She rummaged in the bag and pulled like everything out. Then, she held up a book. "Bish!" She exclaimed with an excited little shimmy-dance. "Bish, bish, bish!" She repeated, handing the book to me.

I looked at the book and flipped it around to see the cover. "Oooooh," I raised my eyes and head back in realization, "Fish."

"Bish," she said, in a tone that was like "ah-duh that's what I said you moron." She popped her pacifier back into her muzzle, and got herself all snuggly and comfy on Norville again.

I took in a deep breath. This was gonna be so embarrassing. If any of my friends burst through the door right now and saw me with this little girl in all her pink jammies cuddled up on Norville, and me reading this kiddie book to her...

"Hey, look, it's Nanny Norville!"

That's what they'd say.

I took in another sigh, and cracked open the book. "The Rainbow Fish," I read the title.

"Bish," she said.

I gave her a bit of a sneering look. "You correcting me?" I questioned.

She just nuzzled Norville and gave another couple smug suckles on her pacifier.

I looked back at the book. "The Rainbow... Bish," I read. I turned the pages, reading slowly. I forgot to show her the pictures, but she didn't seem to want to. She was just snuggled into Norville, and her eyelids started to droop.

"...You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea. But, you will discover..." I glanced to the woosal.

She was still. For a moment I was almost worried she was like... Dead. But then I felt her tummy swell and shrink--she was breathing.

She was asleep.

I turned my head toward the TV. There, my game was still paused. I gazed at it forlornly for a moment, before looking back at the little girl.

She let out a little coo and wriggled, when a tuft of Norville's fur tickled her nose.

Okay... She was actually... Kinda cute. Kinda.

I moved slowly, closing the book and setting it down in my lap. I adjusted in the bean-bag so it wasn’t a chore to hold her.

It was sorta quiet. Kinda peaceful. I could just barely hear some chatting from downstairs. But, right here, I was sorta... In my own little bubble.

I watched her sleep, and did my best to keep still and silent. I only moved to stir the pins and needles in my legs, and to ease the ache that started to come on from how stiffly I was sitting.

Finally, I dared move a little more, so that she was given a spot in my bean-bag chair next to me. I leaned back, and stared up at the ceiling, watching the fan lazily spin, just enough to stir the air. My lids felt heavy, and soon I was staring into my dreams.

They were full of bish.
