InkTober 2019 Day 20 Tread
Another Scouting scene. Mr. Bear (that's ME!!!) and Aiden learning some basic First Aid skills.
Poem below:
"A good Cub Scout
is always prepared.
They try not to pout
if ever they're scared.
If ever in trouble
use necktie or string
Tie your knot double
and fashion a sling!"
Keyword for today was "Sling".

Brings back memories. I was a Cub Scout long, long ago. ^.^

I was a Leader for five years. Two years for Beavers, 3 in Cubs. In Beavers my name was "Brown Beaver" (character from the Beaver books). In Cubs I was "Baloo".
I still have nightmares where I had to kneel in front of the kids in Beavers, while they sang "We all pat Brown Beavers head...", and the circle of little kids proceeded to pound the top of my head with over-enthusiastic pattings. *Shudder* :P

Had to look up a few things like "Beaver." US scouts & Canadian scouts have a few differences. Like in the US the base rank is Bobcat, then Tiger, Wolf, Bear. Although I'm still not sure whoever though using a tiger for a rank of US scouting made sense. Figured they'd use an animal indigenous to the country.

I'm not even sure about the US scouts anymore. When they denied gay boys entry they lost all my respect & attention. I do know it's something like Cubs, Weblos, Boy Scouts then you have to leave or become a Scout Master at 18. I was reading that Canadian Scouts actually have programs well into the 20's. I find this awesome.

When I did Leadership stuff, I was involved with more than just our Scout Leader committee (I was on a committee!!!)
We talked to local authorities and leaders of the community. The Seniors who had contacts with all sorts of organizations. The local Mayor and staff. Business owners. It was fun learning the steps needed to organize many of our fundraisers, like delivering phone books through town, renting tables to sell chocolate covered almonds/popcorn options/cookies or raffle tickets, scheduling and planning ahead to book a movie theatre for 20 uniformed kids... all these events took time to prepare and execute. Knowing all the right people, the steps needed, it was really cool.
There's no exceptions to any kids joining in Scouts up here. Gay, Straight, ethnically diverse... all that matters is you're there to have fun, learn things, and wear your uniform with pride!

When a young man is taught useful skills and treated with dignity and encouragement, and the skills he's learning are interesting and appeal to him... yeah, he's learning stuff, but it's really cool stuff!
Here's he's learning how to make a crude splint and sling for First Aid, and he's soaking it all in like a sponge. Mr. Bear is a good teacher, and fun to be around. (not when he's tired and cranky though!)
