Lots of people claim they can find water, he's a fennec, so he's likely a 1/8 member of a desert population, judging by how many people tried to find and dig wells before, I'm going to guess roughly... the situation is more a matter of 'there's so many well diggers that the number of well diggers in the land is soooOOOOOOOOOOOO large it's A an unnecessary job, making it cheap. Or also just as likely B: Yes, his skills would be worth alot of money, but what's that? He's not a trained swordsmen? Not the worst way to go. He hadn't had any water in five days. I imagine drowning is much more pleasant if you go out quenched.
But this is such a great comic. I love the artistic style and how much detail goes in every part of it. In this case I love the gold cover over the spring. Something as precious as water given respect by being capped with gold.
