there was a sugestion earlier on in the comics storyline that the binding process leaves the recipient physicly exausted at the very least, weather its painfull or not...we are about to find out.

The Nethers draw energy (nutrients) from the host's physical body to create their own physical form. It would be exhausting for a child but a fully grown Viridi like Desmond isn't going to have an issue. I don't think it would be painful, instead just feel like a physical effort.
