The opposite, actually. Heat agitates the sulfuric compound (specifically, propanethial S-oxide) released when cutting onions. If you freeze them for 10 or so minutes before slicing them, they're not only easier to cut but the compound is prevented from being released during slicing.

I have a 2-year degree in Culinary Arts - and to this day I cannot figure out how to cut one of these demonic bulbs. Thank dog they sell them already chopped so I can just pay someone else to do the dangerous work.

While that's technically true, there are two substantially easier and more reliable means of avoiding the gas released while chopping onions.
1) Do your slicing underneath your kitchen vent van (or as near as possible if your stove is in use). The gas is released in extremely small quantities, so a simple vent fan is usually enough to disperse it before it can cause your eyes to sting.
2) Freeze the onion for about 10 minutes before slicing. This not only makes it firmer and easier to cut, but also retards the release of the gas, preventing irritation.

To prevent crying while cutting onion, just put a bowl (or glass) filled with water, put the knife blade in the water and cut the onion while the blade is still wet.
The active substance of the onion and what makes us cry is attracted by humidity and the eye is the most humid part of the human body, so if the knife is wet, the substance will be more attracted by it rather by the eye. ^^
If you feel the slightest itch in the eye, just put the knife in the water again and continue cutting.
PS : It really works, i tested it :D
