They don't need horseshoes in the wild because the hoof naturally keeps wearing itself down slowly over time. Domesticated/working horses sometimes travel a lot more distance and thier feet get a lot more wear than normal, so the horseshoes help mitigate the wear and tear :D
They still need thier hooves clipped down and shoes replaced from time to time, but as long as its done properly, its as painless for the horse as getting your nails clipped. Some horses respond to it better than others, though, because they still probably feel a lot of wierd tugging, and thier foot is being held at an awkward angle

Also don't forget that even the most advanced pavements are still fare more erosive on hooves than just good old Mother Earth. it's both average distance travelled and types of surfaces traversed.
