So, you guys want to know what happened that day? Okay, I’ll tell you…

I woke up to a bright-blinding haze. I squinted attempting to make out my surroundings. I turned around, nearly rolling over someone. It was Daniel. He looked so peaceful laying next to me. I suddenly remembered why he was there. I turned back the other way to look at my phone. We still had some time but not much.


Joel
Dan? Wake up.


He groaned slightly. He always did enjoy sleeping in.


Joel
Dan?...


I saw him open his eyes slowly, then he quickly shot up!


Daniel
WHAT TIME IS IT?!

Joel
Don’t worry. We still have time.


He breathed out and rubbed his eyes, attempting to wake further. He took a moment to reply to me.



Daniel
Sorry.

Joel
It’s okay.


I scooted back towards the headboard of the bed. Daniel looked back at me, then did the same. There was this silence between us. Like both of us had something to say but couldn’t find the right words. The silence was abrupted when I heard a knock at the door.


Joel
Come in!


The door opened slightly and my mother popped out from the doorway.


Julia
You boys up yet?

Joel
Ya.

Julia
Good. Well Dan, your parents are outside getting ready. They want you to get dressed and meet them down there soon.

Daniel
I’ll be there in a bit.

Julia
Alrighty.


The silence returned for a bit before Daniel got up.


Daniel
I uh, better go get ready.


Joel
…ya.


We both made eye contact He seemed as if he wanted to say something more, but then bowed his head and turned around, continuing to walk towards the bathroom. I sighed. I don’t know why but I began thinking of a gift that was given to me a long time ago. I reached down and opened the drawer to my nightstand. I grabbed the box it was in and opened it. It was beautiful, how like I remembered. I felt conflicted then but I wasn’t going to spend my last day with Daniel laying in bed. I set the box down and got up, walking towards the bathroom. The door was open and I saw Daniel brushing his teeth. I couldn’t help but smile a bit. His eyes met mine again and I laughed. Then I walked over to the adjacent sink.


Daniel
What?

Joel
Hm, I was just remembering that time I fell and scraped my elbow.

Daniel
What-like, 5 years ago? Ha! Ya, I remember. You were such a crybaby about it too.

Joel
Well it hurt!

Daniel
*chuckles* What made you think of that anyway?

Joel
I don’t know. I guess I’m thinking about a lot of things.

Daniel
Ya, me too.


We finished brushing our teeth and getting ready. Afterwards we walked back to my room. Daniel began to get dressed as did I. Then I sat down and Daniel began to put his shoes on. Suddenly, a wave of emotion consumed me. Was this it?! Were we just gonna say our “goodbyes” and move on with our lives?! Never to see each other again?! I couldn’t process this level of anxiety. When Daniel looked back at me, I broke down in tears.


Daniel
Aw, Joel c’mon…


Daniel walked over and sat next to me on my bed. He threw his arms around me, pulling me in close; My face buried in his chest.


Joel
I’m sorry, I didn’t want to cry.

Daniel
It’s okay, Joel. It’s okay.

Joel
I wish I was strong like you.

Daniel
*chuckles* Hey, I’m not as tough as I look.


I remember thinking “Where did all these tears come from?”


Joel
I’m never gonna see you again.

Daniel
Hey! That’s not true!


Daniel cupped my face then brought us eye-to-eye.


Daniel
Look, I don’t know what’s going to happen. But, we'll figure something out, okay? I’ll-I’m not just going to ignore you. We’ll find a way to see each other.

Joel
You promise?

Daniel
I promise.


He pulled me in tightly for a hug. I held on. My eyes glassy from the tears. As I looked up, I saw the box I left on my nightstand. My eyes widened. And in that moment I knew what I had to do.


Joel
Dan?

Daniel
What?

Joel
I-I have something to give you.

Daniel
Oh c’mon. You didn’t need to get me anything.


I walked over and grabbed the box. I didn’t know how he would take it but I just couldn’t let him leave empty-handed. And to be honest, I wanted to give him a reason to come back to me.


Joel
I had it forever. I was just-I was waiting…

Daniel
Waiting for…


I handed him the box. He opened it and saw this beautiful heart-shaped necklace. I could see he was stunned! He could barely make out any words.


Daniel
Wha...where did you get this?!

Joel
I’ll tell you some other time.

Daniel
But why me?


I didn’t know how to answer back then. But I knew in my heart ‘why’. And I think he did too.

Joel
Here.


I smiled. I took the necklace and pulled the halves apart. I took his piece and placed it around his neck. Then, put the other half around my neck. I could see he was holding back the tears in his eyes.


Joel
You like it?

Daniel
I…(nods) ya…


We pulled each other in for another hug. The two-halves magnetizing as we came close. Then breaking apart as we pulled away.


Daniel
Thank you.

Joel
-Thank you, Dan.


There’s a knock on the door again, it was my mom.


Julia
Hey guys, sorry to interrupt but I’m afraid it’s time Daniel....


We let go of each other and both stood up. I began to follow him outside. Everyone was there. Dan, his brother and his parents. We all said our goodbyes. Dan got into the truck and rolled down the window. He smiled back at me.


Daniel
I’ll call you.

Joel
You better. *chuckles*


Then they drove off, into the sunrise. I held on to my necklace as their car turned the street. I knew I would see him again. One day…

So...


Joel
...what do you guys think?

Kate
That was the sweetest thing I ever heard.

Joel
Ha, really?! Taylor?

Taylor
And that was the gayest thing I ever heard.

Kate
Oh, don’t be an ass!

Taylor
Well I’m sorry. He had to get all sappy at the end.

Joel
*chuckles* I’m glad you liked it Taylor.

Taylor
Ya-ya...

Conductor (Loud-Speaker)
Last call for Train 927. All aboard?!

Joel
*breathes in*

Kate
You sure you don’t want us to come?

Joel
I’ll be fine. Plus, I don’t know if I can trust you with that camera of yours.

Kate
Hey, that was a total accident!

Joel
I don’t know, looked like a still-shot to me!

Taylor
Can we not talk about this again?

Kate
Oh, whatever! Just get out of here. *laughs*

Joel
Well uh, bye guys.

Taylor
Hey, you call us if you need anything, alright?

Joel
I will!

Taylor & Kate
Bye!!!









Joel
