Chapter Six

Dolly grabs onto Chase’s arm, pulling him toward the closet in the front entrance, she whispering him instructions. “You stay here! Don’t say a thing, don’t make a sound!! If Dad finds you here he is going to freak out alright!!”

She opens the closet shoving him inside before he could protest, shutting it closed and hiding him from sight before looking back toward the front door that her father was behind.

Chase lets out a sigh, the closet dark with hardly any light peeping through it. “Okay… sure… right.”

Dolly lets out a sigh as messes her fur and tries to bunch up her clothes to make it look as if she had been sleeping all day, she then opening the door to great her father. “Daddy!! I wasn’t expecting you so soon, this is so embarrassing I’m hardly prepared.”

Dolly’s father stares down at her while holding a box packed full of photos and other various objects. He looking past her for a moment to stare out at her very messy house, he never having seen his daughter’s place so unorganized. “Is something wrong? Your house is usually much more organized than this.”

Dolly nods her head well aware. “Oh, it’s a combination of me being upset over my brother and partner’s disappearance, and me being lazy on my days off.”

Dolly’s father slowly nods his head. “I see.” He holding the box he is carrying out for Dolly to take. “Here.”

Dolly seems a little confused. “What is this?”

“Teddy, every photo ever taken, every belonging we still had. It’s all here.”

Chase lets out a tired yawn as he leans back against the wall of the closet, a curious look filling his face when his body rests against something warm and furry instead of a wall, Chase turning his head back to see what it was, spotting a white wolf with blue eyes who was staring back at him with a horrified expression while trying to flatten himself back against the wall away from him as best as he could.

Chase turns away from him as he closes his eyes to doze off, Dolly really not liking to introduce people to her Dad if he wasn’t the only one shoved in here.

He is about to fall asleep when realization hits him, Chase letting out a gasp of shock as he opens his eyes and quickly turns back to the other figure in the closet, realizing now that he was one of the targets he and the others had been looking for.

Chase is about to call out in his surprised when Shiya reacts quickly as he reaches out, wrapping his right arm around Chases neck and locking him in place while holding his left hand over his mouth to keep him from saying anything.

Dolly stares up at her father as he hands her a box filled with several of Teddy’s belongings and photos of him. “I… don’t understand… why would you get rid of everything belonging to him…?”

Her father stares down at her with a frown. “Teddy carries a mark of a curse upon him, I cannot have that curse be brought into the family, so he is to be removed from it.”

Dolly shakes her head no as she places the box down on the ground beside the door, that just stupid. “Oh come on Dad… you refuse to talk about or say a word about Teddy since you met with him to talk about him joining Raven Wolf, and after all that time THIS is your decision on the matter, just removing every memory you have of him!? You’re just going to disown him? You can’t do this to him!”

Her father raises his voice to her. “Teddy left this family on his own accord, he is the one that disappeared, he is the one that made the decision to join Raven Wolf, he is the one that brought the curse upon himself! I did nothing but try to stop him until it was clear that there was nothing I could do.”

“But that-”

“Teddy must have known that I would not allow the curse to be brought into my family, being thrown from it was his own doing.”

Dolly’s father lets out a sigh as he looks out toward her house, it a complete mess, there not looking as if there was even any place to sit, he never seeing his daughter’s house in such a state before. “I intended to spend much more time talking this over with you, but it seems as if you are otherwise occupied.”

Dolly slowly nods her head, as much as she wanted to talk this over with her father now was just not the time. “Yes… I’m sorry… I just can’t talk right now…”

Her father places his hand upon her head. “I did not mean to upset you, but in time you will come to understand why I made this decision.” He motions toward the box that he had given to Dolly. “I thought you would want these, they do not belong in my home anymore.” He turns away leaving, Dolly slowly shutting the door behind him.

Shortly after Dolly’s father had left a loud crashing sound fills the air as Chase throws Shiya over his shoulder into the door of the closet, forcing it from its hinges and bringing it to the ground, Shiya hitting the floor on his back hard. He lets out a painful groan as he tries to get back up, this action stopped when Chase gets on top of him pinning and keeping him down, Shiya managing to keep his hand free as he holds it at Chase, the air between them rippling for a moment before hitting Chase and sending him flying off, Chase hitting the wall behind him and crashing into a small table in the front entrance knocking it over.

The two glare at one another, each one waiting for the other to react, this intense stare interrupted by a pounding sound from the neighbour beneath Dolly hitting her ceiling with the handle of a broom and yelling at them to smarten up and keep the noise down.

Chase looks over to Dolly demanding an explanation. “Conner what’s going on!? What is he, the most important of our targets doing here in your house!?”

Dolly does not answer, the angered look leaving Chase’s face when he realizes that she is crying. “Hey… Miss. Conner… are you alright?”

Dolly presses her forehead against her door, her body growing weak as she slowly slides towards the ground until she is sitting, her sobbing growing louder as she slowly turns toward the box filled with the childhood belongings and photos of Teddy. “He could he just throw Teddy away like that…? How could he…?”

Chase stares at Dolly, he looking away from her and back to Shiya who still kept his eyes glued on him, but had not chosen to attack when he had been distracted by Dolly, Shiya instead motioning toward Dolly, as if expecting Chase to do something about her.

Chase takes his eyes from Shiya and looks back to Dolly, getting to his feet and making his way over to her stopping behind her and kneeling down next to her, placing his hand on her shoulder. “Miss. Conner…?”

The swift fox that Shiya had said to go by the name of Aither is sitting on the rooftops while watching Mort and Vaan question the city inhabitants as they search for the girl that could be the computer hacker that they were looking for, a frown filling his face when the phone in his pocket begins to vibrate from him getting a call. “Oh come on.”

He picks up the phone to answer it. “Love if you don’t stop calling me I’m going to turn my phone off, I only keep it on me for emergencies so-”

The pretty voice on the other end of the phone interrupts him before he can say anything else. “Aither I’m so sorry to interrupt you during your work, but this IS important, I saw someone break into Miss. Conner’s house, I don’t know what he’s doing there as I can’t see inside. I don’t know if this means much but, he’s a raccoon.”

Aither frowns at that information. “A raccoon?” He looks around him, not spotting any sign of the raccoon that he couldn’t get rid of before now. “Son of a-” He hangs up his phone turning away from his targets as he quickly begins to make his way through the city, his objective and target now changing.

Dolly takes a deep breath as she tries to compose herself, now not the time for this. After all, if what Shiya had said was true then an assassin was on his way here to her house. “Okay, I need to get a hold my myself, life or death situation here.”

She turns back to Chase looking at him, she not sure how to even begin explaining. “I’m… really sorry about this Lockheart… I just…” She shrugs her shoulders, not sure of how to even begin explaining Shiya’s presence here to him. “I’m sorry… I just couldn’t take him in… not without answers. I wish I could explain everything to you but I don’t have the time because there’s an assassin after me and a guy hiding under my bed.”

Chase stares at her, this news leaving him a tad bit speechless. “Excuse me…?”

Dolly forces herself up to her feet, she needing to organize and take control of this situation. “Ok, we need to go somewhere else, before what’s his name gets here.” She looks around her. “Where’s the guy that’s hiding under my bed? He come out yet?”

Fitz answers her from inside her room. “Just give me a moment.”

He walks out of Dolly’s room joining the others, a look of recognition filling Chase’s face when he sees him. “Fifty-Six Z?”

Fitz comes to s stop, letting out a groan as he rolls his head in disbelief. “Oh come on you have got to be kidding me!” He holds his hand out to Chase. “I just can’t stop running into Super Soldier’s lately, you have no idea how much this is driving me crazy, honestly there are no words to describe my frustration right now.”

Chase holds his hands out to either side of him things just getting more and more confusing. “What is going on!?”

Shiya looks back to Fitz. “Do you have another place for us to go?”

Fitz shakes his head no as he points to Chase. “As long as he’s here I got nowhere.”

“Come on there has to be someplace, it doesn’t have to be your home just somewhere we can hide for the time being.”

Dolly speaks up while she walks over to her sofa, grabbing onto the bottom of it and pulling, throwing it over with a loud bang, she reaching inside an opening that had been cut into the bottom, finding and pulling out a bracelet that looked much like the one that Shiya had on, shoving it in her pocket as she looks back to the odd assortment of people that had gathered here, they needing to act now. “Someone needs to figure something out, because we can’t just gang out in the streets where everyone can see us.” She motions towards Shiya. “If we take him out looking like that someone is bound to spot and recognize him from the pictures that the Government Military has put out and turn him in.”

Shiya speaks up offering a solution. “I can hide us, but it’s going to alert everyone looking for me that I’m out of hiding, the domestic military included. So we’ll have to be careful.”

Fitz looks back to him. “How exactly do you intend to so that?”

Shiya looks back to him, it simple enough. “A cold and heavy fog, with the all the rain that’s falling right now most people won’t think twice, but those who know of my abilities may catch on and intensify their search efforts, so we’ll have to find a new hiding place quickly to avoid running into them.”

Dolly nods her head that working just fine for now. “Alright then you do that.” She looks over to Fitz. “While you think of somewhere else we can go, there has to be somewhere you know of that you wouldn’t be too worried about bringing Lockheart to.”

Fitz glances over toward Chase looking him over for a moment before slowly nodding his head. “Yeah… I think I got somewhere we can go.”

Shiya walks over to the balcony pushing the window open and stepping outside, the white wolf holding his hand up as the air begins to grow cold and thick, a heavy fog rapidly filling the city until it is covered. He turns back to Dolly and the others. “Alright… let’s go.”

Chase shakes his head, refusing to do anything. “I’m not going anywhere without an explanation!”

Dolly looks back to Chase. “Please Lockheart, I can explain everything to you later, for now though… I just need you to trust me alright?”

Chase stares up at Dolly, even if he didn’t know Fitz or Shiya well enough to trust them he without a doubt trusted her, he eventually nodding his head yes in agreement. “Alright… fine… let’s go.”

Vaan looks around him at the thick fog that had so suddenly surrounded them confused, he checking through his small hand held computer for any explanation to this. “I don’t get it… there’s nothing on the weather about any of this or where it could have come from, and it’s not smoke, you would certainly smell it if it was.”

Mort looks around him, this indeed strange. “This fog is chilly don’t you think…?”

Vaan shrugs his shoulders. “Yeah… which makes it even weirder…” He sighs to himself. “The weather around here lately has just gone completely insane I think… strong winds blowing in from nowhere, rain on days that are supposed to be warm and sunny, and now this.”

Mort holds his hand out, the rain starting to freeze, falling down as wet slush instead of water. He picks up his radio using it to contact another Super Soldier. “Heads up Quincy, it looks like your target is on the move.”

Vaan looks back to Mort. “You think this is being caused by our target?”

Mort nods his head yes. “Ice and cold are his specialty, no doubt about it, this is his doing.”

Vaan looks out toward the fog, it indeed a possibility when you put it that way. He turns to Mort about to comment on this when his phone begins to ring, Vaan now turning his attention to it to answer, recognizing the number on the display.

Mort looks back to Vaan as the black cat holds the phone up to his ear. “What do you need Swartz?” There is a pause as he listens to the voice on the other line, Vaan holding the phone up against his ear with his shoulder as he begins entering some information on his small portable computer. “Are these coordinates where you are right now?” He pauses again as Kane gives him his answer, Vaan continuing with his work. “Alright sure, it’s not a problem at all.”

Vaan hangs up the phone, Commander Mort beginning to question him on the conversation. “What did Swartz want?”

Vaan doesn’t look up from his computer as he begins inputting some commands. “Just the current satellite images of his location.”

“What for?”

Vaan lets out an amused smirk. “Knowing him he’s lost and is too proud to ask for directions.”

Eve is staring out of one of the top floor windows of her father’s museum, she hardly able to see a thing outside. “How odd… first the rain and now this.”

There is a ping as the elevator stops on the floor of the museum that Eve is on, the doors opening as the mouse that had been hiding in the museum basement comes through approaching Eve, she staring out at the thick fog she could see through the window.

Eve looks back to Tahki shocked to find her up her, though this was the level of the museum where only the living quarters of her and her family were it was still dangerous for her to be up and about. “What are you doing here? You’re supposed to stay out of sight.”

Tahki walks up to the window, stopping next to it and staring out into the fog. “Instinct… something didn’t feel right…” She stares at the fog, this sending her a clear message on what was wrong. “The chieftain’s location has been compromised… he’s trying to keep himself hidden as he runs to another place to hide.”

Tahki grabs onto the window to open it, Eve grabbing onto her arm and stopping her. “Hold on you can’t go out there! The military is everywhere and there are Super Soldiers, just like you, who are not wounded and are actively hunting you down! If you go out there you’ll get caught or worse yet, killed.”

Tahki steps back from the window, Eve correct. “Yes… I wasn’t thinking… how unlike me…”

Eve stares at Tahki, she able to tell from the look on her face that she was very worried right now. Eve turning from her and out toward the fog, knowing that Tahki had every right to be worried right now. “He’s going to be fine, and even if he isn’t and gets himself caught he has you as his backup plan remember? He’s depending on you to heal and then get him out of there.”

Tahki nods her head fully understanding. “I can’t help it you know… Shiya is someone whom I respect, and a friend. When it comes to keeping him and the other members of Raven Wolf safe my wellbeing becomes the last thing on my mind.”

“I understand the need to protect those close to you, but you have to look after yourself too.”

Tahki looks back to Eve understanding that. “As a Super Soldier I cared only for myself, I would look after myself and no one else, even members of my own batch did not watch out nor care for any of the other. It was simple and it worked, there no better way to survive through our trials. When the True Bloods destroyed us and I woke up alone, again the only person I had to look after was myself. It wasn’t until I was brought to Raven Wolf that I would have to look after anyone by myself.”

She shakes her head it not an easy adjustment at first. “My job, since joining Raven Wolf and until now, is to protect Shiya. And I always did just that, but when I was first giving the task I never put his safety above my own… not for a long time. Shiya and his people were just a job that I was expected to do. They were nothing  more than that to me.”

“And then my view began to change… and everything that I had placed so neatly under those simple little labels became so complicated and confusing and I… was terrified… I was becoming less like a machine and more like a person that THAT of all things, I was starting to worry about their safety over my own, and that illogical thinking was scaring me. Now though… I wouldn’t give my life a second thought over keeping the people I love safe, and it’s not a scary or frightening thought to me anymore, in fact the idea of putting my safety before theirs is almost mortifying to me. In fact it’s not even a difficult thought anymore more, it’s simply the first thought that will come to my mind.”

She turns away, heading back to her hiding spot within the museum’s basement.

Dmitri gets out of his desk, walking over to the window and looking out of it, a smile crossing his face when he sees the thick fog that had so suddenly developed, this clearly telling him that the target he and his men was currently after was on the move. “I believe it’s time for me to go out and get a little fresh air.” He turns away, heading to the door of his office.

*******

The door to the balcony of Dolly’s apartment opens, Aither walking inside out of the thick fog and freezing cold slushy rain and looking at his surroundings, the apartment a complete mess with no signs of anyone anywhere, it pretty clear to him that who he was looking for was not here.

He begins to look through Dolly’s belongings, opening closets, drawers and rummaging through anything he could find, looking for clues that could help him both confirm that Shiya had been here, as well as maybe tell him where he could have gone from here.

He pauses for a moment something on the ground having caught his eye, he kneeling down and picking up a small blue crystal that had at one time been tied around a necklace that had broken, the mess around the area that Aither had found it indicating that the hide had broken during a scuffle or fight of some kind.

He frowns to himself, taking his phone from his pocket and calling his contact while staring at the crystal he had found, he beginning to talk as soon as the phone on the other end of the line is answered. “He was here all right, he left the record of his memories behind.”

“Something must have happened to him then, he wouldn’t leave something so precious to him behind.”

Aither continues to search through the apartment. “You didn’t happen to see anyone leave did you love?”

“No… I’m sorry… I see the apartment from a rather long distance from where I am, once the fog came I completely lost sight of everything. I have no idea where he could have gone.”

Aither shakes his head. “Wonderful… I just love having near nothing to work off of.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“No need to apologize love, Shanira asked me to do this for her because I’m a professional, I still have my ways of tracking him down.” The fox walks into the bathroom, looking over to a dirty uniform that had been thrown into the laundry, he picking it up and looking it over. “It looks like there was another soldier here. Male, thin build, doesn’t know how to eat a milkshake.”

“Maybe one of the Super Soldiers that she works with was over for a visit.”

The fox enters Dolly room approaching her computer desk and turning the tower on. “Oh, well that’s just great, let’s just throw one of the Super Soldiers into the mix why don’t we. I’m trying my best not to have to confront the military head on during this assignment, Shiya is not making that easy for me.”

“From what you’ve said about him Shiya was never a fan of how you handled things, maybe he found out you were coming there and that’s why he ran away.”

Aither shakes his head. “He’s much too soft, especially for a source of destruction. That’s why he’s the only one that anyone has managed to track down. Me, how many people do I have chasing me down? None. How many does Shiya have? This whole bloody city and then some…” He begins to rummage through Dolly’s desk when he finds nothing of interest on the computer. “You do what you have to do to stay elusive… Shiya can complain about my way of doing things, but it will never change the fact that my way works. Shiya’s on the other hand, does not.”

He pauses when he finds a small storage stick while searching through Dolly’s desk, the fox picking it up and plugging it into the computer, opening the folder and looking through it. “Well now… Miss. Conner is just the center point of all things interesting now isn’t she?”

“What did you find?”

Aither goes through the folders. “It’s nothing that will help me with locating Shiya, but interesting stuff none the less, a bunch of files corresponding to some projects belonging to our old friends the True Bloods.”

“What would something like that be doing there?”

“It must be from that little hacker the military is looking for.” He takes the stick out looking it over. “I think I can use this.”

“Since when were you after that hacker?”

Aither shakes his head, that not being the target this would help him get. “I’m not after her, alongside finding Shiya, Shanira sent me here to snag the intelligence model Super Soldier, who happens to right now be chasing the hacker. I can use this to make him think that he’s found her, and bring him straight to me.”

“How do you intend to do that? You’re not very good with computers.”

Aither clutches the small memory stick in his hands as he gets to his feet. “You’re right love. I’m not, but I know someone who is. You didn’t think I came here alone did you?”

“What about Shiya?”

“Well you came here didn’t you? Even though I asked you not to? You can look for him while I do this.”

“Oh… I would love to, really, but you know how difficult it is for me when I go out in public…”

“The city is full of fog isn’t it? You’ve nothing to worry about.” He walks up to Dolly’s balcony preparing to leave. “Anyway, I must be going now. Things to do and all that, see you when I’m done I supposed.” He pauses for a moment upon realizing something. “Oh that’s right, you haven’t told me where you are yet, oh no matter, meet me at that fancy restaurant you liked so much the last time we came here, I’ll treat you to dinner and then you can take me back to your place… or I can take you to mine, whichever you would prefer.”

“Be careful Aither.”

“I always am.” He hangs up the phone as she stands on the balcony, looking out at the thick fog that right now surrounded him, he sighing as he makes his way off the balcony, climbing up the side of a building and beginning on his way.

Kane looks down toward his phone when it alerts him to having received a message, he staring at the satellite image that Vaan had just sent his way, it nothing but a an endless field of long green grass, his figure standing within it with nothing else around for miles.

Kane lets out a wide grin as he looks up from his phone and ahead of him beginning to quickly make his way forward, the view in front of him nothing like the image that Vaan had sent him, he in fact standing in front of a forest of white trees and earth.

The large tiger comes to a stop in front of the forest edge, lifting his hand to one of the white trees and rubbing his fingers across the branches, the bark cold to the touch with the white frost that covered it easily scrapping off.

Kane turns away from the tree as he stares toward the dark looming forest that lay ahead of him. No doubt about it, this was where he wanted to be.

He walks among the tall overshadowing trees, there no signs of people or even life around him, the air becoming chillier the deeper he got, the crunching sound his boots made within the snow with every step he took the only thing he could hear.

He continues on for a while, though it was clear to him that he was headed in the right direction he was unsure of how long it would take for him to find what he was looking for.

*******

Fitz makes his way through the thick fog, he periodically stopping to look back to the others that were with him not wanting to lose them, the group having been making their way through the city for about an hour now. “Just a little bit further and we’ll be there.”

Dolly keeps an eye on Shiya as they follow Fitz, though the white wolf’s leg was quickly getting better as the days passed  it was still not finished healing, the ground now slippery from the cold slush Shiya’s fog of ice had turned the falling rain into. “Be careful, if you slip and fall in your condition you’re really going to hurt yourself.”

Shiya looks back to her, he being sure to be careful. “I’ll be fine.”

Chase looks the two of them over, it still difficult for him to accept that Dolly was actually sheltering and helping out one of their targets, one of the people they were supposed to find and bring in if they had any hope of keeping themselves from being destroyed.

“Lockheart, you’re not dozing off again are you?”

Chase quickly turns to Dolly, she having to bring him back to his scenes several times already since starting out of her apartment. “No… I just…” He falls silent not sure of what to say. He looks away from Dolly and over to Fitz whom they were all following. “Where are we going anyway?”

Fitz stops in front of a shop building that displayed a for sale sign in its window, it looking to have closed down and not seen any business for months now. He points up to a window on the third floor. “We’re going to that window up there.” He looks back to the others. “I’ve stayed here a couple of times when I was too tired to make it back home.”

Shiya looks up toward the window. “I don’t know if I can make it, I’ve hardly started walking again.”

Fitz shrugs his shoulders. “No problem, I’m sure I can get you up there, you look light enough to not be much trouble.”

Shiya frowns at him, Fitz having unintentionally just called him short, Shiya just shaking his head before turning away from him.

Fitz look over toward Dolly and Chase. “You two aren’t gonna have problems getting up there are you?”

Chase shakes his head it certainly not an issue. “I’m fine.”

Dolly looks up to the window assessing the situation, she eventually reaching her conclusion as she looks back toward Fit. “Yes, I’ll be able to make it up there.” She looks back to Chase, he carrying a very upset frown on his face, Dolly going to have to find a way to explain this all to him but not sure if he would be able to justify the actions she had taken simply because he did not share her beliefs and what they taught her about the sources.

Fitz grabs into the side of the building, Shiya wrapping his arms around him and clinging onto his back as Fitz begins to make his way up, scaling up the side of the wall toward the window, easily pushing it open once he reaches it and crawling inside.

Chase looks from Fitz and back to Dolly. “He’s the one that the second generation of super soldiers got their nimbleness from you know, even as a kid he could easily do stuff like this.” He grabs onto the wall following Fitz up, Dolly doing the same and making her way after Chase, she not able to scale the wall as easily as they had but still managing to make it.

Chase holds the window open for Dolly as she pulls herself into the building, closing the window after her and then looking the group over. “Alright, can I get my explanation to all of this now?” He looks over to Shiya with a glare. “And it had better be a good one or else I am bringing you straight to General Dmitri, and seeing as I’m the top ranking Super Soldier and none of you are I doubt that any of you will be able to do anything to stop me.”

Dolly places her hand on Chase’s shoulder to try and calm him down, it pretty clear that he was worked up about this. “We’ll tell you everything you need to know.”

*******

Kane comes to an abrupt halt, his travel through the cold eerie forest interrupted when he sees a slight blur of movement, this something he had not caught onto yet since entering this dreary place, it being rather clear of animals or any other signs of life.  He smiles to himself drawing his combat knife from his belt before continuing forward, someone was here, he could feel it.

The tiger doesn’t have to wait long for his opponents to show themselves, two figures wearing bird skull masks leaving their hiding spots with spears drawn,  attacking the intruder in unison.

Kane jumps back to avoid being hit, he taking several large paces away from them as to distance himself from his attackers, lifting his weapon and showing them that he was prepared to fight them if he needed to, Kane recognizing the figure of the female that attacked him, she being the Super Soldier that had come from the same batch as Zack. “Settle down Eleven, there’s no need for us to jump right to ripping one another to shreds just yet.”

Kitchi glances over to Eleven, this person having said her name. “Do you know him?”

Eleven frowns as she lifts her mask off revealing her face to her opponent. “I do not know him personally, I only know of him.” She looks him over able to recognize him even though it had been years since she had seen him, if of curs you didn’t take the trials into account. “He was one of the Super Soldiers that attacked during Iuana’s trials. Seventy Four of batch thirty one, he was one of the first hundred groups of us created… meaning he was one of the original prototypes…”

Kane nods his head, Eleven correct. “I go by the name of Kane now, I even have myself a last name. Swartz.” He gives Eleven a frightening grin. “What about you? You must go by another name as well by now.”

“Eleven… I’m still Eleven.”

Kane lets out a loud laugh, he finding it positively amusing that she would still want to be called a number. “Have you no sense of pride? Of individuality? There’s no need to respond to a number anymore, those days are far behind us.”

Eleven frowns not allowing herself to get sidetracked from the situation. “Why have you come here?”

“I have a proposition for you.”

Kitchi does not seem interested, he lowering his body preparing to spring himself forward to attack, Eleven grabbing onto his arm and stopping him from doing so as she continues to question Kane. “What is it?”

Kane smiles at her as he begins to explain. “The military has sent me to search for and find the Raven Wolf tribe, with the intent of slaughtering them and taking back subject #1502, or as you may know him, the Oracle.”

Kitchi yells over at him, Eleven having to hold him back. “You’re not going to be able to lay a finger on him!”

Kane frowns as he looks at Kitchi for a moment and then back at Eleven. “Tell the little brat to calm down before does something stupid and gets himself killed.”

“I’m not a child!”

Eleven pulls Kitchi back. “Calm down, I intend to hear what he has to say.”

Kitchi holds his hand out to Kane. “He wants to take Yula away!”

Kane speaks up to defend himself. “I distinctively said that it was the military that wanted him, not me. And I’m afraid since the military has decided to slaughter me should I not perform this task I believe that it is in my bet interest to either get it done within the time limit given to me, or leave the before mentioned organization before they have a chance to kill me.”

Eleven finds this information troubling. “You would turn your back on the people who trust and are depending on your strength?”

Kane smirks at the question. “I’m a survivor Eleven, have been since the day I was born. I will do whatever it takes to stay alive, no exemptions.”

Eleven bares her teeth at him, that not all he was. “You are also vengeful… you first side with the Domestics as to collect the strength to destroy the True Bloods because they tried to kill you, and then you come to us when the Domestics try to destroy you.”

Kane nods his head not denying it. “No one should try to kill me without expecting me to retaliate or give them equal payment.” He holds his hand to his chest. “Raven Wolf’s strength is dwindling, you need more strength if you expect to win against your enemies.”

Eleven argues back with him, that not the intent of her tribe. “Raven Wolf seeks peace with our opponents, not victory over them.”

“Yet you still fight, though not for the sake of creating conflict you still fight to stay alive, to keep from being killed. That’s not much different than what I’m doing.” He smiles at Eleven as he begins taking several steps forward.  “Of course if you do not want my help then I’ll have no choice but to attack Raven Wolf and forcefully take subject #1502 back. Like I said I am a survivor, and there are currently two ways for me to survive, one beneficial to you, the other not so beneficial.”

Kitchi’s body becomes tense as Kane comes to a stop right in front of them, Eleven still keeping him from attacking the soldier. Kane’s figure towering over the both of them as he spoke to Eleven. “Admit it Eleven, this little tribe you’ve found yourself in needs help more than ever, you no longer have your powerful chieftain and you are short one of your Super Soldiers, you know exactly what will happen to Raven Wolf if you do not accept my offer and I choose to attack.”

He lifts the sharp combat knife he is holding between the two of them. “So, what is your answer?”

Raven Wolf - 04 - The Wounded - Chapter 05
Raven Wolf - 04 - The Wounded - Chapter 07
Book 4 in the Raven Wolf series.

Due to human negligence the world as we know it has ended and been reborn. The animal spirits that guide man giving them the forms of animals so that they would be able to survive in this new wilderness. Though now carrying the form of beasts man has not forgotten the place they once had, as an existence greater then just what nature wanted of them, an existence above all.

Those that worked to gain their humanity are known as domestics, while those who wished to follow the rolls the spirits had given them were known as wilds. Both groups grew arrogant and hateful of one another, the wilds saw the domestics as selfish monsters, for they were returning to the ways that had once destroyed the world, while the domestics saw the wilds as primitive beings afraid of progress, they no better than wild animals.

The raven and the wolf spirits grew tired of the destruction and fighting, and sided with the wilds in their ideals, the domestics only capable of further destroying nature. In their anger they marked a tribe of wilds with a curse, they being removed from the sacred circle of life, unable to hunt or grow their own food, their souls never able to move on while their bodies are unable to return to the earth when they died. The curse upon them only broken once the domestics are gone once and for all. The cursed tribe now known to all by the name of the spirits whom cursed them. ‘Raven Wolf'
