The most important takeaway I think is the rule that both shapes need to overlap and underlap each other in at least one place, which is one way you can sell the illusion that the shapes are touching. In places that look like they might not be touching, overlapping with an appendage can help as well. Also as a footnote I want to add that, though I used the beans as torsos in the final example that these rules can apply to arms, legs, fingers and heads as well.
