To be fair, Japanese 'practice' weapons such as bokken can still do effective damage to a living creature. The problem, I think, is there's a disconnect between the Japanese and Western culture in regards to wooden arms: the West hear "wooden sword" and think that. Japanese hear it and think along the lines of bokken, which can be an effective bludgeoning weapon.

It depends upon the type of wood. Some, like ash for example, can do some serious damage. If you don't believe me, go have a look at a bunch of dead guys and tell me how many of them died from a bleeding ash hole.
