Built by the American company Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT), the L129A1 is a semi-automatic marksman's rifle that was adopted into British service in 2009. The rifle was the winner of a competition to provide an accurate rifle in 7.62mm NATO for British sharpshooters deployed in combat zones overseas, beating such competitors as the FN SCAR-17 and HK 417. The L129A1 currently provides the British infantry squad with a longer range capability, filling a similar role as the SVD in the Russian military, allowing British forces to engage targets at ranges regularly encounter in such places as Iraq and Afghanistan. The rifle has also been adopted by the New Zealand Army.
