Chad plodded down the hall of his high school, backpack slung over his shoulder, waving to friends as he passed. It was just a short break between classes, but the bull had planned carefully to make sure that he would surreptitiously run into Bento on the way. The bull and the Shiba didn’t share much time in class any more since the canine was now in the “honors” version of most subjects while Chad was just barely getting by in the regular level courses. Chad and Ben had known each other since they were kids and shared most of their life experiences together. They even explored their new burgeoning sexuality with each other. After puberty hit however, Chad was starting to think of Bento as more than just a friend. Chad didn’t have much of a concept of dating or love, but he did know that he wanted something more than just friendship out of Ben. There was a school dance coming up, and it had taken weeks for Chad to work up the courage to even think about asking the Shiba to go with him.

“Hey Ben! You got a sec?” Chad used one of his large hooved hands to gently grab Bento’s backpack as he was passing by. Chad was barely halfway through his freshman year, but he was already taller than most of the seniors. The bull sometimes felt a little awkward as he grew into his rapidly changing body.

“Sure, what’s up Chad?” answered the dog, swing around and peering through his thick round glasses. Bento was short and a rather scrawny for his age, but he made up for it with book smarts and a sharp wit.

“So… you know how they got that thing… that dance coming up? The weekend thing…” Chad was having a hard time with his words. He was far from the most eloquent freshman in his high school, but Bento’s innocent stare caused the bull’s entire train of thought to derail. “I mean...you know, we’ve…known each other for a while, and I… I mean…” Chad had practiced this whole speech a dozen times in the mirror, and now it was falling apart.

Chad was starting to get flustered. When he was a kid playing peewee baseball he would sometimes get anxiety attacks when he was up to bat, but he hadn’t felt that way in years. Now that same warm, nauseating feeling was welling up in his stomach and working its way up to his chest. For the first time in front of his friend since childhood, Chad felt frozen and embarrassed. The bull nervously fumbled his fingers behind his back as he tried to think of something to say… anything to dig him out of the hole he was in.

“Oh, yeah the dance. It’s coming up isn’t it?” chirped Bento. “How about we go together? I’d get nervous if I went alone.”

“Y-yeah. I mean, that’s like…I was thinking that too…” stuttered the large bull. “And like…you know, some of the other guys on the football team are bringing their…I dunno, you know?” Chad was starting to feel awkward again.

“Haha, yeah, it’s a date!” laughed the Shiba. “But I gotta get to geometry. I’ll talk to you later, ok?” Bento gently punched the bull’s flank and headed down the hall, disappearing into an ocean of students before Chad could say another word.

A date? What did that mean? Was Bento serious? Chad was more confused than ever, but he couldn’t stop a big grin from drawing across his face.

My memory is rusty but I think any romantic stuff that students wanted too keep low was done behind the sports building! I was never the romantic type so it was no issue.
