Sarah belongs to me

When I was in elementary school, maybe 2nd or 3rd grade, our teacher wanted us to celebrate Valentine's Day so as a class project we made little 'mailboxes' out of construction paper and decorated them. Well the day came and I was usual excitable self; my mom had bought a pack of cards and helped me make out enough to give everyone in class one. I quickly leave my cards in everyone else's box and sit down to wait, but my enthusiasm slowly fades as no one hands me a card or places one into my box. As you can probably guess I got upset and started to cry, the teacher noticed and asked what was wrong, I told her and her response was to make one of the other kids give me a card that they had received. I remember looking at her confused and asking "Why would I want theirs?" The teacher made me take it and thank them but as soon as she walked away I gave it back to them. After that I never participated in any card/gift exchanges my class ever held, more so when they started forcing us to give cards to everyone regardless.

This lil strip reminded me of that feeling of hurt/disappointment and inspired this pic.

I think those Valentines things shouldn't be get done that early in school. When a little kid in school doesn't get a valentines card they start to think nobody likes them and it hits them really hard. Some may get hit that hard by this experience that they will have a psych damage left and maybe later in live hardly trust people when they tell them that they like or love them.

All too familiar, really.  I've never actually had a happy Valentine's Day.  The only time I spent Valentine's Day with someone was when they spent their time complaining how terrible their boyfriends were and how I was such a good friend.

Well, I always wondered why this is actually a thing in america.
The meaning of thge word love gets watered down, kids are holding up a popularity contest instead.
This is how you teach kids that the world is a cruel place unless you crawl up everyones butt.

I remember those times well.  The same thing happened to me except the teacher didn't try to "help" like that.  Sorry you had to go through that hun.

Oh man. The feelings I get when I look at this art. I was there too. An empty valentines box and a broken heart.

:( hugs i know the hurt. I wouldn't let myself cry though, at least not in front of anyone. Between having no friends and feeling nobody cared, school was rough and I hated being there

I know that pain. I had that happen to me once too it hurt pretty bad. I only had one card at it was a generic one from the teacher that everyone got.

This made me cry I will be honest. Mostly because I know the feeling and just seeing it drawn so well there made me feel it again. I would love to just give her a card and a hug. Not a silly store bought one either. A hand made from the heart card that says. "You are Pawsome" with a big heart around it and glitter and stickers and a box of those hart candies. Then I would just sit with her and be a friend.

You are not alone with this.
But that teacher was just a jerk. Kids are kids and they are stupid and only think about what pleases them. V-Day projects like this are nothing but popularity contests. I know how it feels like to be the looser of such a contest as well. We held a catwalk show during one of our class trips and we were way older. I got booh'd off stage that evening and I had not the strength not to fall apart right on the spot. And I was about 13 back then. My teacher did nothing to stop the class that night.
So as long as their are adults who put kids in to vurnable positions, there will always be those who get hurt.

Did it make me stronger? Properly. I learned how to mask my feelings in public after that day. I learned that the world is not a place for people who wear their heart out.
Did that make it better that the one person who could have stopped the bullying did nothing? Not the slightest.

For example: If you teacher would have been a good teacher, she would have prepared cards for every kid, so everyone does get at least one with a personal note, like "The way you express yourself in words will take you above teh clouds one day"; if the was your english teacher f.e. But not, she expected that class project just to go smoothly and didn't give it a second thought. And neither should you. No one will ask you how popular you were back at school later in life. Nothing of the stuff that seems to be importan when you are a teen matters when you are 20.
Later in life, being popular might open a door or two, but there are many other skills which will take you way further.
