Roboticization...it's a cruel, twisted punishment for opposing Robotnik and getting caught...Your free will is stripped away, but you're still conscious within a body that no longer does what you want, no longer feels pain or pleasure.

Sally spent several years Roboticized, watching herself do horrible things to her friends and loved ones...Once Robotnik was finally defeated, Sally regained her free will, like most Robians..but modifications to her body meant she could never be de-roboticized...it was a blessing and a curse...she would never again be able to feel the warmth of a hug or a kiss, or intimacy. She almost wished she'd died, rather than being roboticized. The fact she still had emotional capability only made matters worse.
