Even when he was drooling on his pillow.
Shadow couldn’t help but admire the blue hedgehog sleeping next to him, as he stroked his head and lulled him back into a more relaxed sleep. Since that night at the lake, Sonic had all but moved in with his darker rival, having accepted his offer. The striped hedgehog would have offered the other hedgehog his bed in favour of claiming the sofa for himself in his two-bedroom apartment, as the second bedroom was set up as an office; but Sonic would change that proposed setup. Tails had been right about his suspicions, that his brother wasn’t sleeping well despite how bedridden he’d become, and Shadow found himself having to stay in the same room at night, putting a chair put next to the bed. It seemed that every night Sonic struggled to sleep peacefully, partially explaining how exhausted he was during the day, and the striped hedgehog was glad his own body didn’t need to sleep very often since keeping Sonic in a peaceful rest was an all-night job.
Needless to say, the two hedgehogs found themselves growing closer every day, Shadow reluctant to leave his side, and Sonic grateful for his protection, to a certain extent. He hated feeling as vulnerable as he did, and thankfully the other hedgehog understood that need for independence all too well. Shadow had also surprised him by showing an unusually tender side that he’d never expected from the tough, stubborn and often cold hedgehog he knew, and after a week he found himself enjoying it. After a few weeks into his recovery, friendship began to shift into something more, and neither hedgehog found that objectionable.
That ended up proving a great help for Sonic’s night terrors, the dreamless pall of panic and pure fright that made it so hard to sleep, as if something horrific were about to happen to him, was so much easier to settle when Shadow shared the bed with him. The protective nature Shadow had within him, that had once helped Maria, now penetrated Sonic’s subconscious as he slept; when his nightmares and night terrors became too much, those strong, dark arms were all he needed to chase his abusers’ influences away. And for Shadow, there was no greater pleasure than having another in his life who needed him, and made him feel so warm inside. This...was love.
And they both felt its pull.
