You look down at Featherweight, who is training his camera at the ponies ready to take off in their carts while straining to himself on the barrier. "Hey bud, you can climb on my back and get a higher angle if you want."
Feather furrows his brow and looks through his viewfinder. "Hmm...yeah, I think that'd be better!" He flutters his wings and lands up onto your back. Featherweight really lives up to his namesake as he rests on you, feeling smaller and frailer than other pegasi you know.
Everyone's direction is drawn to the starting line as Cheerilee begins to speak into a megaphone.
"Welcome, everypony, to the annual Applewood Summer Derby! Who's ready for a race?"
You and Feather shout along with the crowd until Cheerilee speaks up again to define a few of the rules of the race, then turning her attention to the racers.
"Racers, are you ready?"
The ponies lined up in their carts all cheer in return. Each cart has one foal driving and an accompanying guardian behind them in the various different cart designs. You don't seem to recognize any of them outside of general public familiarity.
Feather readies his camera while Perky and the other filly both rear up on either side of Cheerilee. They each make a motion with their pom-poms as the school teacher counts down.
"On your mark....get set....GO!"
The crowd erupts once more as the carts' brakes release and the racers take off. You hear the shutter of Feather's camera rattle off as carts pass by, some roaring off while others take off more moderately. You lean on the railing and the two of you watch as the carts continue on down the road. The track curves around in a loop and consists of three laps, with the same starting line acting as the finish. Unfortunately, you can't see the whole track and the carts soon disappear. Ponies around you chatter as they wait for the racers to return to view.
You speak up to Feather to make small talk. "Well, it'll be a bit before they loop around back. Take any cool pictures so far?"
Feather hops down and leans against the barrier as he looks through photos. "Yeah, I got some good portraits of the racers earlier, and I like a few of the pictures of Peach and Perky." He sorts through the pictures he had taken just a few moments ago and shows one to you. "This one is really good too!"
"Oh wow, it is! No wonder the town paper has you taking photos for them, one of these will look great on the front page." You lean in a bit closer as you look at the photos with him.
