You decide it's a good chance to speak up. You know you want to let them know how cute they are, but need to find a way to work yourself into the conversation naturally. Your thoughts churn on what to do and say for a few moments, quickly formulating a plan.
"You should do a little cheer, too. Get everyone excited and going to make a good backdrop on a few more pictures, right Feather?" You pat him on the head, communicating your friendliness to the two cheerleaders and getting to show Feather a little affection. Feather smiles a nods in confirmation, readying his camera again.
The filly responds with an enthusiastic "Okay!" and the two start to launch into a cheer. They shake their pom poms and rear up into a few different moves as they chant:
"Hooves up high! Hooves down low! C'mon racers go go go!"
The crowd follows along with the last line, erupting into cheer and applause as Feather finishes taking a series of shots. The two foals come running over and ask to look at the pictures. Feather cycling through as the four of you look at the little screen on the back of his camera. You've got them closer now, and have a better conversation starter.
"You two really know how to hype up the crowd, huh? That was a really awesome cheer."
"Cheerilee taught us, she's the best!", the filly responds.
"Yeah!", the colt chimes in, "She taught us everything and gave us our outfits."
"Well she did a great job then, because you two look absolutely adorable.", you say to work in a physical compliment to them both. The filly beams a bright smile, but the colt smiles lightly and looks away with the same shyness you've seen on Button before. You ruffle his mane lightly and speak further, trying to really butter him up. "There's not many colts that have that kind of cheer leading skill, either. Don't sell yourself so short, you're great at this and you look cute in your outfit."
The blue colt smiles wider and looks back up to meet your eyes, a light blush forming on
his cheeks. Bingo. "Thanks, mister!"
"You're very welcome! And you can call me Mudslide, or just Muds."
Cheerilee calls out for the two foals from the other side of the track. Looks like all the racers have arrived and are ready. The filly speaks up, asking if she can have some of the pictures from Feather later. He agrees and says he'll print some for both filly and colt. She turns to leave, not seeming to be as interested in you as the colt who starts to turn before stopping himself.
"It's nice to meet you, Mudslide. Tell me if I did good at the end, okay? Oh, and my name's Perky!" He runs off to catch up with the filly and joins with Cheerilee on the other side of the track.
