Super silly comic to tell a little curiosity, and to vary a bit of just adult imagery. Especulations about pilots cutting up their legs to avoid the effects of the G force is merely a popular forum theory from long ago based in old artworks. In the end, metal legs were just to give the characters the same legs and avoid design different types of legs according to the species =P

The whole team had metal legs, you can see it during the cutscene, when they're running to their ships.
The explanation behind why they replaced their legs was that it was supposed to help with blood circulation when flying around at high speeds, so that the pilot wouldn't pass out from G-Forces. Unfortunately, that's not how the body actually works, and I guess they decided to retcon the idea. Now they just have metal boots.

By "One of my heroes", I meant Fox was one, and there are others out there in different places and fictions. I didn't mean to imply he was the only one with robo-legs. Although, A Fox In Space did make a pretty great joke around it.

I read somewhere that fox and his crew had amputaded their legs so the force of lightspeed wouldn't crush their legs everytime, but instead gather in the metal part of the legs. I dont know if its true, I just remember reading that somewhere xD

It's a common fan theory, usually predicated on the idea that a common problem for pilots is high speed forcing most of their blood down their bodies into their feet, making them pass out from a lack of oxygenated blood in their brains.
The "fix" by amputating the legs so the blood doesn't get forced into their feet doesn't work, though, because without legs, a person has that much less blood in their body, so it wouldn't keep any more blood in the brain. It'd still just collect in the stumps of their legs instead of their feet.

Miyamoto's full response to metal legs question is pretty priceless.. On top of saying it was an attempt to make the characters feel more human he also said, What always concerned him more was what was happening with his tail when he was sitting in the cockpit?
