Quervo and Tsurugi readying themselves as the dark illusion around them crumbles away.
I really enjoy watching Japanese action series like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. However the 41st season left me unsatisfied and at times even downright annoyed. It had a lot of interesting characters, but whoever wrote it had a bad idea of how to create drama.
Spoilers ahead for anyone who haven't watched it yet: throughout the season characters connected to the main cast gets killed off, now this usually would create tense and emotional scenes, but they kill off so many characters I just stopped caring. Scorpio's brother, Shou's mentor, Lucky's father, Orion the ship builder (who they had to travel back in time to kill off) and probably a few more I can't remember on the top of my head.
The Character on the right Quervo was built up from about halfway into the season as some friend of Tsurugi who had sacrificed himself so they could win against Armage (the big bad guy of the season) 300 years before the seasons events. Several times Tsurugi had various clashes with his guilt of losing this friend and massive spoilers ahead: he was somehow used as a vessel to resurrect Armage (seemingly no one can agree what Quervo is at this point, a mere husk puppeted by Armage or he was corrupted etc. etc.). This leads to several encounters between the two (former?) friends and a battle were the two stand off (seemingly without Armage possessing Quervo anymore) and he is just killed off.
This actually pissed me off. They had done this so much and after building him up so much I thought they would do at least something different, but no, just killed off another interesting character. At that point I just felt straight up angry, like was I supposed to feel sad after they had pulled this multiple times? It felt so cheap and honestly killed what little investment I had left in the season as the last interesting buildup resulted in the same predictable result as all the others.
So here is what I wanted to happen, two friends reunited in the final battle. Read the story I wrote for it here: https://inkbunny.net/s/1747071
yeah, it flet like they had to add it to create a false dramatic moment...as if champ's death on episode 16, and scorpio vs stinger saga wasnt dramatic enough...man, champ's story with professor aton, that thing was a colossal heartbreaker.
butr, make quervo a jealous villain...yeah, that felt really bad.
kyuranger is still my absolute favorite season of super sentai after kyoryuger. but yeah, quervo's demisse and garu's lack of real story arc (he basically was lucky's pet) are the two things i didnt like at all.
big bear's death, even sad, was necessary to make shou ronpo understand that the war vs don armage was a serious thing. big bear's death made shou travel the galaxies looking for the power to destroy don armage. the kyurangers would have lost for good without shou's mentoring. and that metoring came from big bear. also, he is kinda alive, as an spirit on kotaro's kyutama. so, he is still around. and again, the phoenix kyutama can bring him back. that's the thing about kyuranger. deaths are not absolute. i mean, madako died like six times. and i am sure she can return once more.

Yeah, that is that season's worst sin, it cheapened the value of character deaths. Also the large cast left little in the way of room for everyone to grow. Also...they went back in time to kill Orion, no side-character was spared.

yeah, but still, lots of good characters, i mean, shou, champ, garu, balance.
and yes, big bear and quervo are such wasted characters. but, here's a thing. the latest kamen rider movie and super sentai season crossover movie. basically established that all super sentai universes are reset, and the dead characters are back. heroes and villains. so, until further notice, quervo is back, and so is big bear.

Huh, I was not aware of that, I suppose I will have to look forward to a sub of that appearing. And I agree, for all the turmoil, there were good characters, but the setting was too hasty and if you read my own take on the ending, you know I wanted to have it end differently, not just because of Quervo, but because Armage turned so generic once he was finally cornered, I expected something more. All in all, the season was very love and hate. Both Good elements and bad ones.
