When Dorulykos got his first assignment as one of the Protectors of his homestead, he couldn't have imagined how deeply this quest would change him. It started out so innocuously, to venture out and dispatch of a nearby snake demon, before more cattle disappeared through the night. With clever tactics, they got stuck in some sort of impasse, where Doru could not strike without being bitten, and the snake could't bite without being struck.

It's those kinds of stand-offs that make even the staunchest of enemies start a conversation, eventually. And so they did. Turned out the snake, Ammodytes, was just passing by, slithering around in a great quest of screwing stuff up and eating people's food. Antisocial behaviour, she admitted, but nothing to be killed over. It was just so pleasant to see the little mortals scramble in fury for revenge, who was she to deny herself that fun?

Doru explained that it was his mission to get rid of her, by any means. He'd rather not die by venom, so he'd prefer if she just left, so he could go home, enjoy his dinner, and wait for the next monster to come by.

It was this, that gave Ammo an idea. If she could somehow team up with this youngster, she could see all the terrified villages she wanted, get much more food than any other monster in the wild ever could, and she'd get to defeat even bigger daemons alongside this aspiring Hoplite. She'd never seen a terrified minotaur, but the sheer thought got her fangs dripping with desire.

He never quite understood why he agreed to this, and eventually just chalked it up to divine guidance, but Dorulykos certainly enjoyed the strange new paths his life had taken. A huge otherworldly snake is a great help in combat, and makes everyone else act very polite and considerate.

They've since left Doru's rural homelands, travelling all of Greece and beyond. After all, There's always bigger fish to fry.
