If I recall correctly, it was to expand upon evolution being directed at a certain time. If you build majority of your life experience at night (playing games all night and not caring much for school, or spending most of your time doing illegal activities at night), you're going to evolve into a Midnight Lycanroc. That's why Midnight Lycanrocs are associated with criminal activity.
