So, I’ve been struggling more with depression than usual this last year, which really is effecting my desire to draw, to the point where it’s just….well, gone (yes, I’m seeing doctors). But for some reason I got this wild itch to start sculpting. I am NOT a sculptor…I think I’ve sculpted about three or four things in my life and they’ve all been little items or what not. But here I was, building an armature for Quill of the picture I just did of her by the forge. Everything was coming along swimmingly, thought it was a good first full body piece. Her head was going to be sculpted as a separate piece and added later due to complexity, and that mitten of a hand is unfinished. I ran out of the red Sculpy I had, which had been setting in a drawer for…I dunno…ten years? And grabbed some other Sculpy and tried to match it up to the current stuff. Funny thing was, I couldn’t get the color or translucency to match. Texture was a little different too…. waitaminute….something is NOT right. Per Squikbats suggestion I took a little bit of the red Sculpy and what I KNEW to be Sculpy and put them in the toaster oven to bake. After the appropriate amount of time and temp I pulled them from the oven and the known Sculpy was nice and solid….but the red stuff….the red stuff just squished, like it’d never been in the heat at all. Fuck me running sideways…the red stuff ain’t Sculpy, it’s TRADITIONAL CLAY.

Where the fuck did the clay come from?! I can’t remember..how the hell did it get in that drawer?! All I can think of is I ordered some when I was doing mold making to help in casting and I just forgot what it was. The sculpture…is fucked. Because I have no access to a kiln to bake the clay and even if I did clay bakes at such a high temp the Sculpy mixed in with it would catch fire.

What a colossal fuckup. Funny thing is I’m not really bent out of shape about it. Slightly annoyed but it was an enjoyable experience, something I actually looked forward to every day. I learned a lot and I’m working on a new one that I KNOW is pure Super Sculpy cause I bought some fresh stuff. So anywho. this is the story of the cursed Sculpture of Quill. There’s probably a lesson or two here, apply to your life as needed.
