Mercedes is the mother of Maximiliana and a succubus of Tethil.
When Maxi and her mother fled to Tethil, they both became immortal devil ladies. While Maxi merely became a Dark Child, Mercedes became a succubus.
As a succubus, Mercedes is able to "enthrall" lovers through their genitals, subsequently controlling their sex hormones.
