This is a little bit interesting. Because this is the first part of a TWO PART SET of images.
This one will provide the full description and context for both images, and this image/description will be linked from the other image. The purpose of this is twofold, it allows a continuation of context and description, and it forces folks to not make a snap decision, and instead go somewhere else to gather the context.
In a way, the tiny bit of effort to find the full context is an aspect of the image and art itself. Hence that this is a two part set of images.
This first one, is all about the context, putting things into perspective. The next one is all about the image, not the words. To provide an image without much if any context but link back to the full context for anyone who can be bothered to follow one click, one link.
So what is the second image about?
It isn't pro nazis. Nor is it pro, or even anti, antifa.
I oppose all authoritarian regimes, this includes the nazi ideology, and the communist ideology which antifa appears to be pushing.
This image is highlighting an issue that I see. The quick vilification of others, the fast judgemental attitude that is being carried by so many. Snap decisions, quick reactions.
I am concerned that the vilification and hate that is being, apparently, quickly sought after, is causing further polarisation of views, and further tribalism. The 'us' vs 'them' mentality is a dangerous one, especially when mixed with justification for and avocation of violence.
It allows for false calls and witch hunts to then progress into violence, through a few simple steps.
- Accuse someone
- Remove context
- Get others to accept the accusation
- Violence is now acceptable due to the accusation that is unfounded and lacking context/evidence
There are two characters in the image. Both are fictional. Both do not exist, and both represent ideas more than individuals. Both are the stereotypical representation of how the other 'tribe' views them.
For the antifa. This is the stereotypical view. A thug, someone who justifies violence, someone who pushes their view first. Someone who will attack and assault first, hence the bat. One that pushes the communist view and wants to kill millions.
For the nazi. This is a stereotypical view of the false calls. Someone who 'is a nazi' as they view it. Who is strong, terrifying and trying to push the ideology that I, and many others, actively oppose. One that pushes the nazi view and wants to kill millions.
The 'antifa' character sees everyone they disagree with as a nazi.
The 'nazi' isn't actually one and sees the antifa character as a violent thug wanting to destroy their society.
This tribalism is horrible. The false calls of others as nazi which in turn increases the tribalism is horrible.
I hope that everyone who sees the second part to this set of images bothers to read through this. And to see how it is not promoting or justifying violence or nazis. It is against both. If you bother to read and understand where it is coming from.
