's birthday tomorrow, and to celebrate, I made her a picture of two of the characters from her story series, By Necessity. So here's Kanina and Brinna, relaxing and watching vids while Kanina complains about Bri's master.

Yep yep. Technically the old one did too, but as a Class 3 citizen it was...

Well let's just say it's the difference between store bought pre made from the grocers freezer section VS cheesecake pudding in a premade pie shell in terms of quality.

*thinks for a moment* sooooo by 'printer' you mean 'replicator'

Kinda, yah. but far less insane.

In my Sci-fi setting that's how most people get their food. A paste made from a flavorless mesh of hybrid krill, soybean and grains, with cartridges for texture and flavor reproduction. Thus you could make something more or less dense, shift mouth feel, reproduce a range of tastes, to get some semblance of what you want.

Basically 3D printing is a go to in the setting because actual replicators border on magic at best.

'any technology, suficently advanced, apears as magic to less advanced races'

replicators arn't that complex once you understand the thoery, were on the way to it now experiments in teleportaiton are under way and replicators are an offshot of that, once you learn how to break mater down into energy [without violently releasing that energy] and then move it to a set point and reforming it into solid mater, it doesnt take much of a leap to take raw energy and convert it into mater useing a templet which isnt too much diffrent from how your system works just yours uses a physical media as the base material where as a replicator uses energy as the base material...and replicators do have limits, they actualy require a gargantian amount of power to function properly...you would be amazed just how much energy it takes to make a glass of water, that said given the curent tech gap and trends in machinery were actualy more likely to have your version first...its a very interesting concept and actualy something i had once considered trying to do myself, creating a universal food supliment that could be pressed and shaped into any form and flavor...i never realy bothered takeing it any further then a thought experiment cause i figured given how people reacted to 'red goo' back in the day the concept of another what amounts to paste based food addative/supliment would not go over well right now.

True, but teleportation is one of the techs I've largely not allowed in my setting. Save for wormholes which I've grudgingly used 'generic gates' because figuring out how to make one and make it stable AND make it big enough for a space ship to fit though is a pain.

Replicators would require at least as absurd an energy draw, and in a society where he lowest rung workers are not enslaved because it would cost more long term? Giving them each a goodies creator would not help. Especially in a corporate state.

By contrast basic food printing exists now. So it's one I chose to go with. Especially since it means you have to then buy a printer if your place does not come with one, you have to buy the paste and cartridges unless your place has a subscription, and you have to buy or subscribe for or program your own food patterns.

Roddenberry's utopia my setting is not.
