#7: Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo & Donatello: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

...you know, that tag line always confused me. "Heroes in a Half Shell." They aren't in a half shell, turtles have shells that in case their entire torso... just felt I'd mention that!

So yeah, one of the earliest passions I had in life was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I'm sure that's nothing new, just about any kid from my era and a bit before loved these four pizza munching reptiles, still they were some of my earliest obsessions and I felt it only appropriate to add them into this. Frankly, they should probably have a higher ranking if only due to nostalgic value but honestly, I'm just kinda winging this one! I guess it still fits though, these days I'm not as big into the TMNT. I've gotten older and realized how bad the original cartoon was and... pretty much 80% of the other incarnations were, but they still have a place in my heart. Of course, I've also come to love the original comic series as I've gotten older, which had stirred a resurfacing of love for this peculiar series so I guess things just go in cycles.

Some of you may recall that I drew these versions of the turtles before. Just sort of my own reimagining of them (Hey, it's a lot better then Micheal Bay's at least!) and it was nice to go back to that; maybe you think it's a bit much, but I like it. It's amazing though, to look back at old art when you're drawing a new version of it and see just how much you've improved. I drew the original pictures of my take on the TMNT and 5 -years-ago and I remember thinking they looked good then, now i look at them and I just feel like J. Jonah Jameson looking through pictures of Spider-Man, is all crap, but in that it's really reassuring to see obvious improvement in your own work. Sort of did a little combo of both the original comic style and the later, color coordinated one, since with clothes I could color theme them, while keeping just the bandannas red. I dunno, I thought it looks neat. I dunno, it's a lot of fun to draw them this way, I may do more at sometime in the future.

I really like this reimagining of the Turtles, it really capitalizes on their personalities and points out how different they are from one another.

I've never liked how identical they all are, plus the general lack of a lot of Japanese influence in their characters, despite being raised entirely by a character that is heavily tied to his Japanese roots... also their lack of clothes always really bothered me since literally every other mutant in that series wore clothes BUT them XD
