Heroes in a Half Shell
#8: Samus Aran: Metroid(put in her Gravity Suit because I dunno, I prefer the coloration... sue me!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gWyfQFdMJA

The legendary, mechanical suit clad bounty hunter, Samus... A character I couldn't do this kind of countdown without. One, because this countdown was in need of some heroines and two, because she's not only one of my favorite female leads in a game, but one of my all time favorite characters, period and that's probably due to the fact that she's unquestionably badass. When a character can essentially be upgraded to be a one-man killing machine, where simply running or jumping into something can kill their enemies... that's some hard core shit right there!

I have a sort of funny relationship with the Metroid games. I love them, but I tend to sort of forget about their existence until a new one comes out! In fact, Samus mainly got added in thanks to the release of Metroid: Samus Returns, but I suppose that's what happens with a less main stream series. It comes, does it's thing and walks away into the night. Of course, this doesn't lessen it's appeal for me, it just causes it to sort of get pushed into the background, but that is why I placed her lower on here then I initially thought I would.

I don't think there's much I can say about Metroid that hasn't been said before; it's a great spin on the Alien-franchise style, immersing you into an odd and solitary world where everything whats to kill you. None of the games do this better then the Prime series, I might add. The amount of depth put into the lure of that game is insane. I remember the first time I played those games and was blown away how EVERY enemy has data to scan and shows that they basically made a fully fleshed out planet just for one game! That's dedication and one I really appreciated to see and while I know to some it's boring, I found myself scanning as much as I could to learn more and more about this ecosystem they had created.

Even lesser games I have a love for. Yes, the often loathed Other M has a place in my heart and I feel it got a bad rap, mainly because it seemed hardly anyone ever played Fusion. I'm not saying Other M is perfect, but it's not as terrible as people say. Adding emotion to the character of Samus is not a bad thing... however, trying to make her and "Zero Suit" Samus two different characters is. Not that I have much against showering her outside her Power Suit, but I dunno, it's reached a point of annoyance where I just wish they'd keep her face hidden, or at least stop acting like they're basically two different beings. Of course, Nintendo has a bad habit of that. Am I the only one that's noticed that that company seems to think that if one of their characters wears a different shirt that they're a totally distinct and separate entity from their original selves? Anyone..? Man i'm really rambling here!

All in all, Samus Aran is one of video games greatest heroines and deserves a spot among the top 12 of my favorite heroes~

>mainly because it seemed hardly anyone ever played Fusion.

No, a lot of people actually hated it partially because they had played Fusion and Other M was basically "Fusion but bad".

>Adding emotion to the character of Samus is not a bad thing

No one said it is. She's been given emotion before, just without horribly scripted words. The WAY Other M handled it, along with everything else, is why it's despised.

Almost forgot to mention this point--yeah, that's basically another reason why people hate Other M. All throughout the game, the only time Samus is allowed to be the character we know her as is when she's in the armor that makes her mistakeable for a man, at which point she also somehow shoots back up to her proper height. In Other M, unlike the entire rest of the series, the armor is what allows Samus to be brave and powerful, rather than her just being a brave, powerful woman using armor that provides her with weapons and defense. Whenever we see her outside of it, it's either monologue time, a series of ass shots, emphasis on how small, weak and traditionally feminine they made her, her being verbally and emotionally abused by Adam, which also retroactively damages Adam's character, or all four. And then she also personally goes out of her way to monotonously inform us more than once that the badass we knew and loved in all the previous games didn't exist even when she was armored up.
