some doodling i put forward on that idea.
Inspired by a Fish monger wear blue tight sleeve shirt and a long canvas boot pants.

so sonic and knuckle already had the signature color just a the strap Pants to perfect the bi-color of the Former Plumbers

Personally, I feel like red suits Sonic more and that green suits Knuckles more. I actually had a similar idea with Marine and Tails, as a reference to Tanooki Mario and Kitsune Luigi.
