My reaction to episode 5

This isn't as much jumping on the bandwagon as it is charging at it like a furious herd of racially symbolic buffalo.

There are reasons for this series to have been so successful: we were expecting corny episodes about dresses and make-up, but got epic battles against mythologic monsters, complex anti-stereotypical personalities, profound metaphors about the transition from childhood to adolescence, sexual obsession, psychotic breakdowns, and unexpectedly awesome episodes about dresses and make-up.

I am putting this on par with freaking Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. There, I said it. So step away. That pegasus is crying and that does not happen on my watch.

I agree with everything you said except the profound metaphor about the transition from childhood to adolescence if you referring to Cutie Marks, especially when it comes to the Cutie Mark Crusaders.  It's been made -extremely- obvious what their special talents are but they just keep dancing around it for several episodes.

X-Men's mutant powers are a much better metaphor since it deals with all the issues growing teenagers deal with...change, being alienated, and thrust into the world of adulthood whether you're ready or not.

Cutie Marks only appear when ponies find their special talent...as it has nothing to do with their physical maturity (which happens with time and not any kind of self-realization) and gaining a Cutie Mark doesn't change a pony's place in life.  It really is more like a merit badge, something earned, than adulthood, something inevitable.

Adolescence is really more of an emotional period than a physical one, so it's not really out of line to paint it that way. The girls are seeking to find their place in the mature adult world, which is really what adolescence is all about. They are still immature because they fail to see their obvious talent and potential. It is an imperfect, broadly drawn metaphor, but let's not forget that this IS actually made for little kids, major grown-up appeal or no, heh.

Spike? Rarity? It's adorable sexual obsession, admittedly. But it'd be kind of creepy in a different sort of show!

I mean I've seen Spike stare at Rarity's ass...but I thought he was a dragon...she was a pony...dragons eat meat...

Clearly you didn't pay that much attention. Spike eats gems! Admittedly, I could see a subconscious correlation going on there...

Actually I haven't seen much of the MLP series...just read cupcakes and watched the Luna game. And played story of the blanks.....

Hm. I actually don't know what either of those things are. I've mostly only seen the series.

Hehe...Cupcakes is gory, Luna is...disturbing, and Story of the Blanks is pretty creepy too.

It was made excruciatingly obvious in Rarity's introductory scene.
Spike: Beautiful...
Twilight: Yes, the decor is coming along nicely. This ought to be quick, I'll be at the library in no time. Beautiful indeed.
Spike: Not the decor. Her. [Points to Rarity]
Also notice his audible heartbeat and heart-pupils and other more or less subtle hints. (Such as Spike doing just about anything and everything Rarity cares to ask throughout the show.)

And later when they're leaving;
Spike: [Sighs] Wasn't she wonderful?
Twilight: Focus, Casanova. What's next on the list?

And in Green Isn't Your Color, Spike himself spells it out: "I have a crush on Rarity!"

As for the ass-staring... well, it's easiest to sneak looks at your crush when they're not looking in your direction, right? :D
